Sir Aga Khan on six-day visit to India - 2003-04-15

The Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, began a six-day official visit to India Monday during which he will meet Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and President Abdul Kalam, officials said.It is his first visit to India in 11 years. He will meet Kalam and Vajpayee later Monday and is also expected to meet deputy premier Lal Krishna Advani and Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha, an Indian government official said.
The Aga Khan will discuss ways to ?broaden the framework of activities being undertaken by the Aga Khan Development Network? in India in his meetings with leaders here, an official release from the Aga Khan?s secretariat said.
One of the main events of his visit is the inauguration of the restoration of a tomb of the Mughal emperor Humayun on Tuesday.
The Aga Khan Trust for Culture in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India carried out the work jointly.
The Aga Khan will also meet leaders of the Ismaili Muslim community which has roots in India going back many centuries.
The Aga Khan Network?s agencies work for the improvement of quality of life through rural development, education, healthcare, micro credit, financial services, humanitarian assistance and the enhancement of non-governmental organisations, the release said.
