H. H. the Aga Khan Visited Portugal at the Invitation of the Government as part of his Golden Jubilee year. He met with many officials and with the ismaili community.

Following is a transcript of a conversation between His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims, and founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), and Don Cayo of The Vancouver Sun. The interview took place Nov. 23 in Toronto.

H. H. The Aga Khan Visited Canada From November 18th to the 25th. During His visit, He met with the ismaili community and met with officials in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

Aga Khan arrives in Dushanbe today

DUSHANBE, October 31, 2008, Asia-Plus -- His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, and founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), is arriving in Dushanbe today afternoon on a six-day official visit.

I would like you to know how deeply touched I am by this wonderful evening and by the celebration of My Golden Jubilee here in India. It has been a time of enormous happiness, but also a time of thinking back to the status of the Jamat in 1957 in India, Pakistan, East Africa, Central Asia, and I say to myself, Alhamdullilah, the Jamat has made progress.

Prince Karim Aga Khan is on a 6-day Golden Jubilee visit to Syria during which He will meet officials, meet his followers, and take part in celebrations marking the end of AKDN-sponsored restoration works at three historical castles: Aleppo, Saladdin and Missiaf.

Born into a world of wealth and privilege, The Aga Khan devotes his life to eliminating poverty and inequality. A religious leader who traces his ancestry back to the Prophet Muhammad, he struggles to balance the traditional with the modern.

His Highness the Aga Khan today received an honorary law doctorate from National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He was cited for “outstanding contributions to the elimination of global poverty, the advancement of women, the promotion of Islamic culture and the furthering of pluralistic values in society”.

I had the privilege of knowing your husband from the time he assumed the Presidency of Tanzania, as leader of the First East African nation to achieve independence. Throughout his years in office, I had the opportunity to admire the steadfastness and integrity of purpose Mwalimu applied to Tanzania's development challenges,' said the Aga Khan in his personal message of condolence to Mama Maria Nyerere following the death of her husband, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere according to The African. He arrived Wednesday and attended the funeral ceremonies on Thursdayy 21st October 1999.

His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims today addressed industry leaders, government officials and development executives from around the world at the World Bank on applying information technology to the problems of human capital and development needs. According to the Aga Khan, it is only by positioning users to shape content and applications, that the full potential of this technology will be realized and its perceived threat to their cultures addressed.

On the basis of my experience in culture and development over the last 30 years, I believe that it is critical to build capacity more generally to position users to be active participants in the advances in the shaping of content and applications. Only then will the full potential of the new information technology begin to be realised. And only then will the concern of some, that the Internet poses a threat to their cultures, be addressed.' The Aga Khan attended the formal launch by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the Presses de l'Universite de Paris-Sorbonne of a new series of publications on Islam. The first volume in the series, L'Egypte Fatimide: Son Art et Son Histoire, brings together the contributions of over fifty eminent scholars who participated in an international colloquium on the subject in Paris in May 1998 co-sponsored by AKTC.
