Posted February 25th, 2010 by heritagePolitical and economic stability in Mozambique for the last 10 years makes the country one of the most important reference points for investment in Africa, said in Maputo on Wednesday Princess Zahra Aga Khan, who arrived in Maputo for a two day official visit.She was speaking during a ceremony where the Aga Khan Foundation signed an agreement with the Mozambican government to build a school in the southern city of Matola. This school is to cater for both primary and secondary education, with the prospect of eventually building a university on the same premises.

Posted February 25th, 2010 by heritageThe Aga Khan, the spiritual head of the Ismaili community, joined President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique on Monday in announcing the creation of Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, an academic centre of excellence which will be the second of some 20 being established by the Aga Khan Development Network across the Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia.
'To educate is a task that belongs to us all,' said President Chissano, calling 'the promotion of quality education for all Mozambicans, a prime condition in the struggle against poverty in our country'.

Posted February 25th, 2010 by heritageThe Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) has purchased 100 per cent of the shares in Maputo's best known hotel, the Polana.
Previously the hotel was 55 percent owned by a foreign consortium headed by the South African Kairos Hotels group, and 45 per cent by Mozambican companies - the national airline, LAM, the private financial investment company, SOCIEF, and the state- owned National Tourism Company, ENT.
The new owners signed the deeds of purchase in Maputo on Wednesday.

Posted July 9th, 2009 by heritageThe Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili branch of Islam, begins an official visit to Mozambique on Thursday, at the invitation of the Mozambican government.
According to a press release from the Aga Khan Foundation, he will attend a ceremony at which President Joaquim Chissano will lay the first stone in the construction of an Aga Khan Academy in the southern city of Matola.
This is the second in an international network of 20 academies, described by the Foundation as 'centres of excellence', and which will be run by the Aga Khan Educational Services.
