SHERGAR’S trainer Michael Stoute has told how the famous steed was “the kindest horse” he worked with.

The Irish-bred thoroughbred was stolen from Ballymany Stud in Co Kildare in 1983 for a ransom of £2million, which was never paid.

The winner of the Epsom and Irish Derbys in 1981 — who was owned by the Aga Khan — is believed to have been shot by his IRA kidnappers after injuring his leg, though the organisation has never officially accepted responsibility.

IRELAND HAD TO settle for third place today in the FEI Nations Cup of Ireland at the Dublin Horse Show, with Britain getting their hands on the Aga Khan Trophy for the 27th time.

Nevertheless, a top-three finish was sufficient for Ireland to book their place at October’s Nations Cup world final in Barcelona, where a team qualification place for the 2020 Olympics will be at stake.

Riding Skara Glen’s Machu Picchu, Limerick’s Paul O’Shea produced a superb double-clear round at the RDS.

reland had to settle for a three-way share of second place in the Longines FEI Nations Cup at Dublin Horse Show yesterday where it was the team from Mexico who were waving at the finish after a brilliant second round performance saw them seize the initiative from their hosts and romp to a first ever Aga Khan triumph.

It was heartache for Ireland in the RDS as Mexico prevailed in a jump-off to claim their first-ever Aga Khan trophy.

An all-female team has won the Nations Cup Jumping for the first time in its 91-year history.

Piled on pressure

It was Team USA who took the title in the final leg of the FEI Nations Cup Jumping Europe Division 1 League in Dublin, finishing on a zero score.

The Netherlands and France threw down a challenge in the closing stages of the competition, which piled the pressure on American anchor Laura Kraut. However, the double-Olympian was more than up to the task and posted the second US double clear of the competition riding Confu, to secure victory.

Uunbelievable job
