Toronto, Canada, 10 January 2024 - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Culture and the Aga Khan Museum have announced a formal collaboration emanating from the Al-Burda Grant Programme, to advance their shared and individual missions, priorities and strategic objectives.

What does it mean when you are asked - "where are you from?" This often innocuous question provides information to identify the historical background of a person but, more often than not, also pigeon-holes migrants based on biases and stereotypes.

This April, the Aga Khan Museum celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing with The Moon: A Voyage Through Time. The exhibition, which runs until Aug. 18, explores the moon’s influence on faith, science and the arts across the Muslim world and beyond.

The first of its kind exhibition has been opened at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada.

The exhibition is about the Fatimids, an Ismaili Shia Islamic caliphate descended from Prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatima.

The display, which runs until July 2, consists of luminous ceramics, intricate carvings shaped from rock crystals, and artefacts decorated with Kufic calligraphy and embellished with vines and leaves.

It is intended to showcase the life, times and the cultural expressions of the Fatimids.

City council has confirmed its support for a property tax exemption for the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre, a museum of Islamic and Iranian art located in the Don Mills area.

The council voted 34-1 on Tuesday to recommend providing a property tax exemption for the museum.

Sharjah’s Barjeel Art Foundation, built on more than 1,000 modern and contemporary Arab artworks from the private collection of its founder Sheikh Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, will launch its first exhibition in North America on ­Saturday.

The venue is fitting. Home Ground: Contemporary Art from the Barjeel Art Foundation will open at Toronto’s renowned Aga Khan Museum, whose mission is to foster a greater appreciation of the contribution that Muslim civilisations have made to world heritage.

The collaboration

Designed by two of the world’s greatest architects – Fumihiko Maki of Japan and Charles Correa of Mumbai – the twin masterpieces are a spiritual, educational and architectural destination in Toronto’s north end.

The new Aga Khan Museum in Toronto plays host to the extraordinary exhibition of artifacts from a 9th-century Arab dhow, which was discovered in 1998 at the bottom of the Indian Ocean in the western Java Sea.

For seven years, exhibitions in Asia and Europe have showcased treasures owned by the Aga Khan, the spiritual head of an estimated 10 million to 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims world-wide.

Words fail me — and that’s not often the case — but words fail me to thank you enough for your most gracious and warm comments on this occasion.

This is indeed a magnificent day.

It is not so often that we have an opportunity of this sort -- to come together in a beautiful setting, in a wonderful spirit of friendship, and to dedicate such a splendid architectural accomplishment.

The Site: The Ismaili Centre Toronto shares a site with the Aga Khan Museum. The two buildings are united by a 6.8 hectare park.
The Park: The Park incorporates a formal garden with five reflecting pools inspired by the traditional “char-bagh”, walking trails, and components suited to seasonal changes throughout the year.

Prince Amyn, brother of His Highness the Aga Khan, celebrated his 77th birthday at the Opening of the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto which is coincidentally located at 77 Wynford Drive in the Don Mills area of Toronto. Prince Amyn played a major role in the building of the Aga Khan Museum. His Highness the Aga Khan recognized this role in the these words at the Opening Ceremony - "And, of course, it is with deepest admiration that I thank the person whose guiding hand has been so important at every stage of this project: a member of my family, my brother, Prince Amyn Aga Khan."
