October 21, 2008, Asia-Plus -- Prince Amyn Aga Khan, younger brother of His Highness the Aga Khan, is arriving in Dushanbe today afternoon for a short visit, according to the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) Dushanbe Office. Hilton Humanitarian Prize Of $1.5 Million Goes To Bangladeshi NGO
The world's biggest humanitarian prize has been awarded to BRAC, the largest non-profit organization in the developing world. The 2008 Hilton Humanitarian Prize of $1.5 million honors BRAC, a Bangladeshi-based NGO, for its achievements in helping to eradicate poverty in nine Asian and African countries. Lisa Schlein reports for VOA from Geneva where the award was announced.
Eight new stamps featuring various development projects of the Aga Khan in Uganda have been issued by Posta Uganda. The stamps, which commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Aga Khan, were launched on Wednesday during celebrations to mark the World Post Day at the Posta office in Kampala.
The Aga khan Development Network (AKDN) is a network of institutions founded and led by Prince Karim Aga Khan, which collaborate with the governments and other organisation, towards improving living conditions and opportunities for people in some of the poorest parts of the developing world like Uganda.
Development agencies for the Aga Khan recently announced details, which will include a pair of buildings on a 17-acre suburban site: a religious and community center by Correa and a new Islamic art museum by Maki.
"My family has been breeding racehorses for five generations," the Aga said. "Two generations in India and three in Europe, and I believe this moment is the apogee of that effort.
Zarkava became the first three-year-old filly since Akiyda in 1982 to win Europe's richest race, the four million euro Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, at Longchamp here on Sunday. Trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, handled by jockey Christophe Soumillon and running in the colours of the Aga Khan, Zarkava beat last year's runner-up Youmzain.

The Aga Khan arrives in Syria, August 2008, and is received at Damascus International Airport by Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari, Minister of Tourism Dr. Saadullah Agha al-Qala'a and Resident Representative of AKDN in Syria Mohammad Mufdi Seifo. Dozens and dozens of buses are arriving in Salamieh from Iran to participate in the celebrations of Golden Jubilee.
Prince Karim Aga Khan is on a 6-day Golden Jubilee visit to Syria during which He will meet officials, meet his followers, and take part in celebrations marking the end of AKDN-sponsored restoration works at three historical castles: Aleppo, Saladdin and Missiaf.
