Aga Khan III Event - 1923-07-27

Date:
Friday, 1923, July 27
Location:

July 27, 1923 - Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah, Aga Khan III sent a message from Lausanne, regarding the Treaty with Turkey.
He talked about how Indian Muslims could help Turkey and how Turkey was now on a threshold of a new era. He said, 'Under this great treaty, Turkey will become an independent and compact national State. The fetters which so long held her enchained have been struck off. Turkish sovereign powers will no longer be impaired by the excessive and anomalous privileges enjoyed in the past on Turkish territory by the subjects of other countries...' He continued, 'Turkey has suffered grievous losses, and her people require direct aid. We ought to send from India special missions to restore sanitation, to bring back health, and to encourage movements for child welfare. It is to the youth of Turkey that we must look for the salvation of the country, and how can we do it better than by helping the children?' (Aziz; 757)
