Canada Supports the Work of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada - CANADA SUPPORTS AKFC - 2005-06-07

Date:
Tuesday, 2005, June 7
Location:

The Honourable Aileen Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, announced today that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) will provide a $13.5 million contribution over five years to the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) to pursue the Partnership for a New Millenium Program. This initiative will focus on the areas of health, basic education, rural development and civil society strengthening. The Minister made the announcement after meeting His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan during his visit to Ottawa.
'His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan's visit provides Canada the opportunity to reiterate our long-standing commitment to AKFC's work to alleviate poverty and promote human development in low-income countries of Asia and Africa,' said Minister Carroll.

The 2005-2010 Partnership for a New Millenium Program will provide direct support to civil society and partner institutions, facilitate human and institutional linkages between Canada and the world, and influence best practices in development through active research, communication and learning. The expected results are to reduce poverty and vulnerability, especially for women and children.

The AKFC, a Canadian charitable organization, seeks fresh solutions to pressing social and economic problems with an emphasis on health, education, environmental protection, and rural development. Its work contributes to poverty reduction strategies and national development targets for selected countries in Asia and Africa, and is in line with CIDA's Social Development Priorities, the internationally agreed Millenium Development Goals and Canada's International Policy Statement.

Since the Prince's last visit to Canada in May 2004, the Canadian Government has funded a number of AKFC initiatives in countries such as Mozambique ($9 million) and Pakistan ($8.2 million) for a total of over $17 million.

Funding for the Partnership for a New Millenium Program was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
