The March-2003 Bulletin of the World Health Organisation (WHO) published a research study on the achievements of Aga Khan Housing Board for Pakistan's (AKHBP) Water and Sanitation Extension Programme (WASEP).
The programme being implemented in the Northern Areas (NA) and Chitral in partnership with Aga Khan Foundation and KFW-the German Development Bank, provides integrated water supply, health, education and sanitation services to the local communities on the principle of community participation and self-help.

The extensive and scientifically exhaustive study, conducted by Aga Khan University's Department of Community Health Science, concluded that WASEP, using the integrated environmental health development approach, had been successful in reducing diarrhoea incidences in children (the single largest cause of infant and child mortality in Pakistan) within the programme coverage area by at least 25 per cent.

Abdul Karim Ajanee, Chairman, AKHB said that it was indeed an honour for Pakistan that WHO had included the WASEP case study as the lead research paper in its prestigious Bulletin.
