I have been following with great interest the many positive developments that have been taking place under your Excellency's leadership and I have shared your concern when the country has been occasionally faced with challenges such as the present drought. And I am always impressed by that strong sense of national response which carries you past the trials you have to cross and back again to the path of hope and progress.

The last decade in Kenya gives much cause for pride and though we must recognize that there remain a number of problematic situations, I see real signs of optimism spreading across the continent of Africa.

Within this context, the Aga Khan Development Network has decided to accelerate and enlarge its activities in Kenya and in Eastern Africa generally. In the economic development field, we are extending our activities significantly in industry, in financial institutions and in tourism. In the social sector in the next years, it is expected that we will invest up to $80 million to turn the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi into a focal, tertiary care hospital serving the whole of East Africa.
