TRIPPING the night fantastic: Maestro Lester Lanin and his orchestra will be on the bandstand at River Oaks Country Club Monday night when the Houston Youth Symphony & Ballet hosts a dinner and dance honoring Houston Chronicle publisher Dick Johnson and wife Belle as its Cultural Leaders of the Year. Lanin, by the way, played at the * wedding party of Princess Yasmin Aga Khan and her groom, Christopher Jeffries, a couple of weeks ago at The Plaza in NY. The British Royals love Lanin, too, and he played for the wedding galas of Prince Charles and Di and Prince Andrew and Fergie. The Cultural Leader of the Year event is always one of the highlights of the year, and its proceeds go toward scholarships for talented musicians and dancers in our area. There are a very few tickets left, and for info call 621-2411... Incidentally, Dick and Belle got home last week from their annual playcation in Mexico, and Dick was on hand Tuesday night at Tony's for a dinner party honoring Georgette Mosbacher. Belle was a little under the weather Tuesday but is looking forward to Monday night. Georgette was in town to attend the Chronicle's Dressed Women luncheon Wednesday at the Doubletree/Post Oak, which benefited the March of Dimes. As soon as Georgette was presented with her Best Dressed award, she headed to the airport to be in Washington in time to have dinner, at a table for two, with hubby Bob Mosbacher. TEXAS Commerce Bancshares' Ben Love and wife Margaret were also at the Tony's dinner. Love is the main speaker for Monday's Cultural Leader event. Carolyn Bookout was solo at Tony's, because hubby John, the retired Shell Oil exec, was in Europe on biz. Laura Sakowitz was solo, too, as was Lynn Wyatt - their respective hubbies were out of town on biz. Lloyd and Joanne Davis got back from their retreat in the Bahamas just in time to make it. They had lunch at Paradise Island with Merv Griffin and Eva Gabor last week aboard the USS Midway Bay, as guests of U.S. Ambassador Carol Hallett and her husband, Jim. The ship, the only one of its kind, is a 550-foot-long guided missile cruiser and had a price tag of $1 billion. Griffin quipped, ``If I'd known that, I could've bought it instead of Resorts International in Atlantic City. That's about what I owe on it.'' The Davises, who have been traveling constantly, say they hope to be home in Houston now for about a month. Gail and Jenard Gross have been ``on the road'' a lot, too, and got home just in time for Georgette's party. The Grosses had been in Egypt; from there they went to Aspen and then to Acapulco. Think about packing for a trip like that| Gail said the highlight of their trip to Cairo was dining with Madame Sadat in her home there... GEORGETTE houseguested with chum Susan Glesby, and Susan's date to the dinner was Nick Florescu. As I reported, the Mosbachers have no real home base in Houston now, since business takes them elsewhere. They're keeping their apartment on Sutton Place in NY, and they moved into their Washington, D.C., abode in the chic Kalorama section on Friday. ``Bob can walk to work from the house there,'' Georgette said. ``I'll put a fax machine in the house there, but my office will stay in NY.'' In fact, she had dinner in Washington Wednesday night and was in her NY office early Friday morn. As for Houston in the foreseeable future, when the Mosbachers are in town, they'll bunk in a garage apartment on the grounds of Bob's son Rob's home. FYI: As promised, Georgette is adding a full line of cosmetics to La Prairie's action, and it'll be introduced in August... A few others in the party crowd were Chronicle editor Jack Loftis and wife Beverly; Fernando Segura; Barry Silverman; and Washington's Peter Roussel. Michel T. and Billye Halbouty and John and Brenda Duncan, who had previous dinner plans, stopped by for cocktails. FYI: Georgette flew into Houston's Hobby Airport a little after 7 p.m. Tuesday night and was dressed and on hand at Tony's by 8. Doing five European countries in two weeks, on commercial airlines, is the Mosbachers' way of life now that he's in President George Bush's cabinet.. Oops, the number for St. Thomas High School in Thursday's column was incorrect. The correct number is 864-6348.
