The government in Mwanza Region has requested Aga Khan Foundation in Tanzania, to look into the possibility of constructing a new hospital in Mwanza City to work hand in hand with Sekou Toure Regional Hospital.

The Acting Regional Commissioner, Ferdinand Mkude, when officially inaugurating a surgery room in the Aga Khan Health Centre in the city, which cost Tsh. 20 million issued the request. Mkude, who also is Nyamagana District Commissioner in Mwanza City said the city was expanding fast in parallel with population growth.

This population multiplicity causes Mwanza Regional Hospital fail to meet health requirements for the growing population of the city.

According to Mkude, this state of affairs has forced many ordinary sick people to seek medical services at Bugando Referral Hospital.

He said Bugando Referral Hospital is a referral hospital for all residents of the Lake Zone region, but it is forced to receive ordinary patients who should be treated in regional hospitals.

Mkude said the government in Mwanza Region is ready to cooperate materially and financially, including providing plots to enable construction of a hospital.

Director of the health center owned by Aga Khan, Teresa Chiesa saids he would take the request to the head of the Aga Khan Foundation for consideration.

Aga Khan Foundation aims at raising health services in the country by building modern health centres and hospitals for very little profit, she added.

'The aim of Aga Khan Foundation is to provide services of best quality here in the country. So your request, Acting Commissioner is appropriate and I believe it will receive best consideration,' Chiesa said. Aga Khan Surgery Health Centre in Mwanza City also provides new examination apparatus such as ECG- Electro Cardio Gam, Ultra Sound and Urine Culture machines.
