High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello has expressed his profoundest sorrow over the death of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan. He conveys his condolences to Prince Sadruddin's wife, Princess Catherine Aleya Aga Khan, to his nephew, Karim, the Aga Khan, and to the rest of his family.
In Prince Sadruddin there existed a seemingly inexhaustible well of energy and vision. When combined with his extraordinary compassion for his fellow human beings, the effect was truly inspiring; in his life and in his actions, Prince Sadruddin embodied those qualities to which we should all aspire. Through his work assisting the world's refugees, in promoting human rights, in addressing humanitarian situations, in seeking to help bridge cultural divides, and in working to preserve the diversity and beauty of our natural environment, Prince Sadruddin's impact ? for the better ? on the lives of so many was incalculable. Through his inspiration to those many more who had the privilege of meeting or working with him, as I was fortunate enough to have done having started my career in UNHCR under his leadership, his legacy will hopefully live on as the most eloquent means of celebrating his life.

He will be sorely missed.'
