Speaking at the first Convocation of the Aga Khan University on 20th March 1989, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, referred to the Aga Khan University Medical Centre as a most impressive story of growth and expansion.'
'Starting from the inauguration of the School of Nursing in 1981 to the passing of the first batch of graduates, the centre' he said, has not only gained recognition in the country, but has also convincingly demonstrated the vitality, vigour and expertise available within Pakistan to achieve world class status in the field of health and medical education.'

President Ishaq Khan praised Mowlana Hazar Imam for his vision and enlightened leadership: 'His love for Pakistan and a life-long commitment to improving the quality of life of people have been the driving force behind numerous institutions and projects launched by him from the mountains of Gilgit to the mangrove forests of Karachi. He has most deservedly earned the gratitude of the entire Nation. On behalf of the Government and the people of Pakistan, I would like to convey His Highness our feelings of deep indebtedness and gratefulness for which words seem so inadequate.'
