The School, established in 1967, is one of the leading private schools in Tanzania, providing education from Form I to Form VI to seven hundred students, and employing thirty four teachers.
The Aga Khan Mzizima School is a beneficiary of the Aga Khan Foundation supported 'School-Based Improvement Project'. The project activities include weekly workshops, conducted by education specialists, to develop teaching and learning materials. In addition to Mzizima School, three government and two private schools in Dar-es-Salaam have benefited from this Project.

The English Language team at the School has recently devised an orientation course for all new entrants to Form I, to counteract their insufficient command of English as the language medium of instruction at secondary school level. All new students undergo a six-week orientation course in English within the context of the syllabus.

The Ministry of Education in Tanzania supports and encourages this programme. During 1988, the curriculum has been tried in about twenty Government secondary schools, as part of the Ministry's Overseas Development Agency (ODA) supported scheme for improving English at secondary-school level. This larger scheme is being implemented by a task force of the Ministry of Education staff, working with a team of British Council professionals. After successful completion of Phase 1 (1985 - 1987), the project has been extended for a further period of two years to cover developmental work in Science subjects, besides on-going English and Mathematics activities.

On 11th October, 1988, Mawlana Hazar Imam visited the Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School in Dar-es-Salaam, during his twelve-day visit to Tanzania. At the School, Mawlana Hazar Imam was received by Mr. Riyaz Gulamali, Chairman of the Aga Khan Education Service, Tanzania; Mr. Amin Kurji of Mzizima School Management Committee and Mr. Aridaman Singh, the Headmaster.

Mawlana Hazar Imam met with the members of the School Management Committee, staff and project Specialists, and reviewed the Project and school activities with keen interest. A copy of the school magazine - 'Reflection', was also presented to Mawlana Hazar Imam, who warmly congratulated the School on its achievements.
