Translation of Pahelaj Ni Mata e Kunvar

PAHELAAJNEE MAATAA-E KU(N)VARNE VANMAA(N)

ho jeerebhaaire, pahelaajnee maataaye ku(n)varne vanmaa(n) janamyaajee
tyaa(n) naadd vadhaaree shree narsha(n)gejee............................................1

O dear brothers, the mother of Pahelaaj gave birth to the prince in the jungle.
There Shree Narsang made increasing sounds(calls).

ho jeerebhaaire, paannee chhataa(n) ku(n)var ne dudhe navraavyaa(n)jee
chokhaa chhate moteedde vadhaavyaa(n)jee..............................................2

O dear brothers, inspite of there being water, the prince was bathed in milk
and inspite of there being rice, he was showered with pearls.

ho jeerebhaaire, da(n)it harannaaka(n)s taaro maareeyo nahee(n) maru(n),
taaro maraaveeyo nahee maru(n) maare mukhadde chhe naam shree narsha(n)ganu(n)jee......3

O dear brothers, the demon Haranaakans proclaimed that he will not die and
said: "as in my mouth resides the name of Shree Narsang".

ho jeerebhaaire, da(n)it harannaaka(n)s sheekaare chaddeeyaajee
vanmaa(n) te deetthaa rotaa baaljee.........................................................4

O dear brothers, the demon Harannaaka(n)s embarked on a hunting expedition.
In the jungle he saw a crying child.

ho jeerebhaaire, tyaa(n)thee pahelaajne lai gher-j aavyaa(n)jee
tatakhann josheeddaa teddaavyaa(n)jee...................................................5

O dear brothers, from there he took Pahelaaj and came home and
right away called for the astrologers.

ho jeerebhaaire, juore josheeddaa tame ved puraann maa(n)jee
aa keeye nakshatre ku(n)var janameeyaa(n) jee........................................6

O dear brothers, study the previous scriptures and from them decipher
upon which star was the prince born.

ho jeerebhaaire, mul nakshatra maa(n) ku(n)var pahelaaj janameeyaa(n)jee
te tamaaree khe karavaane aavyaa(n)jee.................................................7

O dear brothers, Prince Pahelaaj was born under the influence of a very
significant star. He has come to destroy you.

ho jeerebhaaire, taare pahelaaj ne lai van maa(n) chalaavyaa(n)jee
tyaa(n) vaaghe te keedhee rakhavaalljee................................................8

O dear brothers, then he took Pahelaaj with him and left for the jungle where
the Protector had made musical sounds(at his birth).

da(n)it harannaaka(n)s taaro maaryo nahee maru(n), taaro maraaveeyo nahee maru(n).
Maare mukhadde chhe naam shree narsha(n)gnu(n)jee.............................9

The demon Harnakans reasserted his claim of immortality and said:
"My mouth has the word of Shree Narshang.

ho jeerebhaaire, tyaare Pahelaaj ne lai samuddhr maa(n) naa(n)kheeyaajee
aa jaldeve keedhee rakhvaalljee..........................................................10

O dear brothers, then he took Pahelaaj and plunged him into the ocean.
He was saved from the water by the Protector.

ho jeerebhaaire, tyaare pahelaajne lai haathee aagall naakheeyaajee
aa haatheere keedhee salaam saatjee..................................................11

O dear brothers, then he took Pahelaaj and placed him in front of an elephant.
This elephant gave salutations to him seven times.

ho jeerebhaaire, tyaare pahelaajne lai ghaannee maa(n) naakhyaajee
laatth bhaa(n)gee ne kattakaa thayaa saatjee.......................................12

O dear brothers, then he took pahelaaj and placed him in an oil-mill.
At that time one of the instruments broke into seven pieces.

ho jeerebhaaire, ku(n)var pahelaaj ne lai hollee maa(n) khaddakaaveeyaa jee
aa hollee maa(n) vaayaa sheetall vaayajee............................................13

hollee - burning of a heap khaddakaaveeyaa - to pile up
vaayaa - wind, air sheetall - cold
O dear brothers, then he took Prince Pahelaaj and piled him up the heap
of burning matter. However, upon this heap blew cold winds.

ho jeerebhaaire, ku(n)var pahelaaj ne lai tha(m)bhe bath bheeddaaveejee
tha(m)bh faaddee ne narsa(n)g aaveeyaajee.........................................14

bath -

O dear brothers, then he took Prince Pahelaaj and forced him to embrace a
red hot pillar. The pillar burst open and Lord Narsang came out of it(to the rescue of pahelaaj).

ho jeerebhaaire, pragatteeyaa parmeshvar ne huvaa aana(n)dajee
pahelaaj nee vaare narsha(n)g aaveeyaa jee........................................15

O dear brothers, the Lord manifested and it was a happy occassion.
Lord Narsang came to the rescue of Pahelaaj.

ho jeerebhaaire, eso geenaan peer bhannaave Sadardeen
paache karoddeeye pahelaaj taareeyaa jee..........................................16

O dear brothers, this geenaan is taught by Peer Sadardeen.
Pahelaaj saved five crore souls.
