Aga Khan Council for the Central United States will host the first Ethics in Action event July 20-21 at the Plano Municipal Center. The inaugural event marks the first collaboration between Aga Khan Council in Plano and the city’s Multicultural Outreach Roundtable (MCOR).

The two-day event will be from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the lobby at 1520 K Ave.
Samina Hooda, communications coordinator for Aga Khan Council of Central United States, said attendees can expect to see an interactive display of ongoing service projects locally and abroad that will hopefully inspire a heart for service.

“Bringing it to Plano is important because the city of Plano stands for all of these ethics in its own mission for excellence,” Hooda said. “It’s very important for us to draw this connection that although these ethical projects may be in other global arenas, the same ethics are shared with the city of Plano.”

Hooda said Ethics in Action is a traveling exhibition that’s finally reaching Plano. During the exhibit, the Aga Khan Council will display its eight ethics of action: inclusiveness, education, compassion, self-reliance, health care, sound mind, sustainable environment and governance. And each of the ethics will be accompanied by an ongoing project that’s impacting a community’s quality of life.

The Aga Khan Council has global outreach in 25 countries including Pakistan, India, countries in Africa and across the Middle East, as well as in North Texas. Hooda said this year represents the diamond jubilee and 60th anniversary of Aga Khan as the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, and through their celebration, Ethics in Action has expanded across Aga Khan Council’s global community to add service projects and spread awareness of the work they’re doing locally and abroad.

Shaheen Salaam, co-chair of MCOR, said the city got involved with Ethics in Action event “because it fits into what we stand for – building bridges between communities. That has been our aim for as long as I remember and that is the foundation of MCOR.”

Mayor Harry LaRosiliere will host the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday and officially open the two-day exhibition.
