Aga Khan IV (H.H. Prince Karim)

MAY 11, 1961

On May 11, 1961, in his first public engagement in Mombasa, His Royal Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan opened a new £25,000 nursery school.

“I hope we will be able to establish in this school one sound principle.” He said “ Children should not learn of the word race but should learn of the word friendship. I would like them to start their education here and to move on through the stages to primary, secondary and I hope, university education with students of all different races but forgetting entirely that those students are of different races” He said that he would like them to replace this concept of race with friendship.
