Introduction to Anant Akhado

in

ANANT AKHAADO literally means a gathering of unlimited souls in an eternal context. It is a composition of verses dealing with the process of evolution and involution of all souls since time immemorial. Overall, it is an expression of a timeless vision of hope for an individual soul bound to the clogging and hampering of this illusory material existence; to rise beyond it into eternity where it will unite with souls from other periods and ages in a joyous and festive manner, and merge with the ultimate reality as an eternal homecoming.

(1) Imam Aga Ali Shah, His Highness Aga Khan II (1298-1302/1881-1885), the 47th Imam was born in 1246/1830 at Mahallat, where he spent the first decade of his age. In the outset of 1256/1840, Imam Aga Ali Shah had been taken to Iraq, where he stayed a few years with his mother. Under the instruction of Iranian and Arab teachers, eminent for their piety and learning, he had been taught the oriental languages, and he achieved a reputation as an authority on Persian and Arabic literature, as a student of metaphysics and as an exponent of religious philosophy.

02. Translation

Dhani Salamat Datar Hazrat Mawlana Imam Sarcar Aga Ali Shah (1) expired in Poona on August 17, 1885 at 5.30 p.m. (2). Its news was routed to Bombay by telegram at 8.00 p.m., whose jamat set out for Poona in a special train on next day at 8.00 a.m.

01. Introduction

Mukhi Kassim Musa (d. 1896) was the Huzur Amaldari (officer in presence) and an estate agent of Imam Hasan Ali Shah. He was also a close attendant of Imam Aga Ali Shah and Lady Aly Shah. He was also once sent by Imam Hasan Ali Shah in Iraq. When Imam Aga Ali Shah expired in Poona in 1885, his holy body was shifted to Bombay, and then shipped for interment in Najaf according to the will of the Imam. Mukhi Kassim Musa was consigned the responsibility of transporting the bier in Najaf. He wrote the account of his brief journey of 25 days between October 28, 1885 and November 11, 1885.

19. Conclusion

Let us recapitulate the whole discussion that the location of Amir Pir provides an avenue for various healthy activities. It is a best gala for excursion. It is a historical place associated with the history of Jerruk. It should be maintained and that its annual mela should not be abolished. Karachi, Hyderabad and other cities in Sind are thickly populated that none can muster large gathering of the Ismailis except the location of Amir Pir. Some regular and casual venerators visit the cave for vows, but the average visitors come for excursion.

18. Later Developments

Earlier, there was an open piece of land on the hill surrounded with small mounds and sand-hills. It is difficult to ascertain its size during its acquisition. It is however assumed that originally its size was 10 acres. Later, few more surrounding areas were obtained from the government. The document of the Registry Office of Thatta confirms that the size of the location was 14.10 acres in March 4, 1955. Further sites were also acquired till it reached to 24 acres. The location was thickly covered with thorns and wild bushes.

17. Imam's Farman on Amir Pir Mela

In the Mehmani of Itmadi Ghulam Hussain Alinani, the President of the Council of Tando Muhammad Khan, Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah said in Karachi on April 18, 1920, “ You have taken much trouble to build a Majalis Hall on the (hill of) Amir Pir, an excellent work you have done. It is now hot season; therefore, I cannot come there, but will come on next trip in winter. Now you and the members of the Council visit in winter season to perform its opening ceremony. This is the territory of Sind, having such good mela, but its untimely celebration is not good.

16. Tradition of Annual Majlis in India

The Indian Ismailis were quite isolated from one another devoid of the spirit of pluralism when Imam Hasan Ali Shah arrived in India in 1842. In order to bring the scattered Ismailis at one platform, the tradition of holding annual majalis in different parts of India was started for socialization.

15. Mosque in Amir Pir

The white mosque with a dome is the highest edifice on the hilltop. It cannot be confirmed who built it and why? E.P. Delhoste visited the location on February 10, 1839. He submitted to the British Government his “Historical Report on the Routes leading from Karachi to Jerruk” on December 26, 1839. He makes little mention of Amir Pir and other constructions, but did not make description of the mosque.

14. Majalis Hall in Amir Pir

In 1918, Wazir Fadhu Basaria (1848-1918), the third Estate Agent of Karachi, Lasbela and Sind is reported to have asked Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah at Bombay to issue an order to wind up the Amir Pir Mela due to the difficulties faced by the visitors. In reply, the Imam said to build there a Majalis Hall (old name for the prayer-hall, which had not acquired the status of a Jamatkhana, now the term “Community Centre” is used), so that the Ismailis might attend the Jamatkhana too. The Imam changed the date and fixed it from 15th to 20th November.
