The Queen is personally honouring the Aga Khan with a private banquet at Buckingham Palace on Monday to mark his golden jubilee as the leader of the world's 15 million Ismaeli Muslims.

All the senior members of the Royal Family will be there to pay tribute to the 71-year-old, fabulously wealthy, horse race-loving spiritual head, whose followers pay him a tithe of 12.5 per cent of their income.

Asked what was discussed at the Prime Minister's meeting with the Aga Khan, the PMS said that they had discussed the cooperation between the Government and the Aga Khan Development Network, which supported projects in health, education, poverty alleviation, peace and stability. His Highness the Aga Khan today received an honorary law doctorate from National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He was cited for “outstanding contributions to the elimination of global poverty, the advancement of women, the promotion of Islamic culture and the furthering of pluralistic values in society”. The Aga Khan received his honorary doctorate from the Chancellor of the NUI, Dr Garret FitzGerald.

Pakistan: Ismailis Celebrate Aga Khan’s Golden Jubilee - 2007-07-10

The Ismaili community around the world is celebrating the golden jubilee of Prince Karim Aga Khan’s ascension to the throne of the Imamat on July 11, 1957, at age 21 while a student at Harvard University. His grandfather Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah or Aga Khan III preceded him.

He was chosen because his grandfather wanted to be succeeded by somebody young who had grown up during a new age and who could provide a new outlook during his time as Imam.
