In Tajikistan, the Aga Khan’s philanthropy and investment has raised hospitals, hotels, colleges, crops – and in some quarters, suspicion. This is the fifth story in a series of articles on philanthropy in TOL’s coverage area.

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari met Prince Rahim Aga Khan and heads of health, education, drinking water, tourism and culture departments at the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The two sides discussed projects the AKDN intends to carry out in Syria, reaching an agreement on developing cooperation between Syria and the AKDN.
The minister for East African Cooperation, Dr Diodorus Kamala, has expressed government satisfaction on the progress recorded in the construction of the Aga Khan University. He said construction of the university is a demonstration of the growing relations and cooperation among East African Community (EAC) member states.

The expected outcome of the Bujgali power project will also result into increased supply of improved air quality and jobs for Ugandans (app. 2,000 jobs at the peak of construction).
The executer of the project - Bujagali Energy Limited - is a consortium of American Sithe Global, Kenyan Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) and the Uganda government. IPS is an affiliate of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.
The consortium put $190 million into the project while the rest are loans, mainly from the World Bank Group, the European Investment Bank and the African Development Bank.
TORONTO. Michael Brand, the former J. Paul Getty Museum director who stepped down at the Los Angeles institution earlier this year, has been appointed to a consultancy post at the Aga Khan Development Network.
The position places Brand — an expert in Asian art — in line to assume the directorship of the Islamic art and culture museum when it opens in a Fumihiko Maki-designed building in 2013.

On June 21st, the Defendants filed a motion for an order granting summary judgment dismissing the plaintiff's action. The Motion introduces new evidence of forgery and says: "The activities complained of are not infringing the rights of the Aga Khan, who it appears from the forged signatures, has not authorized this action." The motion will be argued 12-JUL-2010 to begin at 09:30, and an affidavit of reply is due from the plaintiff 10 days before this date.

The shortlist of 19 nominees for the 2010 cycle of Aga Khan Award for Architecture was recently announced by the Master Jury. The final Award recipients will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar in October 2010. The range from a textile factory in Turkey to a school built on a bridge in China.
