At the opening of the first Aga Khan Lyc

Princess Zahra visited Toronto, Canada for three days to Chair the International Ismaili Women's Forum under the auspices of the International Social Development and Sports Foundation. The conference took place from May 9 to May 11, 1997 at a resort in King City, just north of Toronto called Eaton Hall. On the opening day, Princess Zahra spoke on the role of women and on the need for enhancing the status of women in society with particular emphasis on Ismaili women. Approximately 100 delegates from all over the world attended this Forum. Princess Zahra wore a green business suit.

From The Daily Telegraph dated January 22nd: The Aga Khan, Prince Amyn, Prince Hussein and Princess Yasmin attended the dinner held last night at the British Museum on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition 'Princes, Poets and Paladins: Islamic and Indian Paintings from the Collection of Prince and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan.'

Friday. Hazar Imam, Chancellor of the Aga Khan University, launched four major projects aimed at strengthening and expanding nursing education, specialised diagnostic services, advanced research and community health-care. He made a speech at the following opening and foundation ceremonies: Rufayda al-Aslamya Center, The Hadi Building and the Juma building.

King Juan Carlos of Spain and Hazar Imam marked the Opening of Zafra House in Granada, Spain. Zafra House is a restored 14th century Arab house in the historic Albaycin quarter of Granada. The restoration took place with financial and professional assistance provided by the Historic Cities Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in the presence of their Majesties, the King and Queen of Spain

Kampala; Hazar Imam announced the opening of a branch of the Aga Khan Foundation. Talks were also held with President Yoweri Museveni regarding the 1989 Protocol of Agreement which relates to the reinstitution and reutilization of the Imamat's properties in Uganda. (click here)

Opening of Leather Industries of Kenya Ltd at Thika by President Daniel Arap Moi: Hazar Imam, speaking at the official opening ceremony, thanked the Government for supporting the establishment of the leather factory and described the leather project as a striking example of what business and government could achieve when working together.

Monday. Mowlana Hazar Imam calls for long term strategy in Urban Planning at the Ninth International Seminar in Cairo, 'Expanding the Metropolis.' The seminar whose inauguration was attended by over 500 delegates from throughout the Muslim world had its opening session at the Arab League Building in Cairo. Also attending the Seminar were Mata Salamat, Om Habibah, Prince Sadruddin, Princess Aliya and Prince Amyn Mohammed. (click here)

Begum Salimah performed the opening ceremony of the extension wing at Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan School in Karimabad.

Mowlana Hazar Imam and Begum Salimah arrived in Sherquilla. Then went to Gupis; Unveiled the plaque commemorating the opening of the Sherquilla School. Hazar Imam gave a speech at this ceremony where he said; 'The Aga Khan School, Sherquilla, is a project of which everyone in the Jamat and in the village can be proud. This school is a marvelous example of what voluntary efforts can achieve. The achievement here at Sherquilla should give everyone the confidence in the abilities of the people of the North.' Hazar Imam gave a keynote speech at the opening session of the Aga Khan Foundation/W.H.O./CIDA Conference on the role of Hospitals in Primary Health Care in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Hazar Imam gave the Opening Remarks at the 6th Seminar in the series 'Architectural Transformation in the Islamic World' of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in Beijing, China.

Fifth Architectural Seminar held at Amman, Jordan attended by King Hussein who formally opened the seminar entitled 'The Search for Form, Places of Public Gathering In Islam' In His opening remarks, Hazar Imam said; 'It is right that I should state My belief that whatever efforts the Award may make to give a new direction and sense of purpose to the environment of the future in the Islamic world, no substantial or long-term results can be achieved unless the Governments and people of Islam .' You are starting your chosen professional training; the opening of your school is, for Me, the beginning of a major new philanthropic medical complex.
