Hazar Imam visited Pakistan for Convocation at the Aga Khan University, Karachi. His speech was preceded by the speech of the Governor of Sind.

Convocation ceremonies of the Aga Khan University attended by audience of 10,000. Hazar Imam, Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the keynote speaker McMaster University President Dr. Geraldine Kenney-Wallace, each addressed the gathering.

On the occasion of the 4th Convocation of the Aga Khan University Faculty of Health Sciences & School of Nursing, Hazar Imam said: ' Concentrating on the problems of the present is necessary, but it should not distract from the pursuit of ambitious goals of the future. We must look through today's problems to tomorrow's opportunities .'

First Graduation Ceremony referred to as the Convocation, was held at the Aga Khan University in Karachi presided over by Hazar Imam in His role as the Chancellor of the University. 42 graduates received the MBBS degrees. Premier Benazir Bhutto was speaker at the Convocation.

Wednesday; Hazar Imam received an honorary degree of Doctorate of Literature in Education from the University of London(Logan Hall). Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, Chancellor of the University, conferred the Degree during the Founders Day Convocation ceremony in which he was cited as 'a calm voice in troubled times, a world leader, uniquely placed to bridge the cultural differences dividing the East and West.' Hazar Imam conferred degrees on 88 doctors and 93 registered nurses at the Third Annual Convocation of the Aga Khan University in Karachi. Hazar Imam met with M.I.T. students at Cambridge, Massachusets who were the first graduates of a new two-year post-graduate advanced degree programme in Architecture launched in 1985 under the aegis of the Aga Khan Programme for Islamic Architecture at Harvard and M.I.T. At an informal ceremony, Hazar Imam presented the graduating students with a personal gift and a certificate enrolling as the first members of a newly founded Aga Khan Programme Alumni Association.

Hazar Imam was conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) by McMaster University at Hamilton Place in Hamilton, Ontario in recognition of his leadership in the advancement of health and education in the world. In a tribute to Hazar Imam, the President of the University Mr. Alvin Lee said, 'In that Islamic tradition, which treasures education, rest the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims and their religious leader, His Highness the Aga Khan.' Hazar Imam, in His convocation address, discussed the issues of ethics and standards in Science.

A special convocation was held conferring Hazar Imam with the honorary fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan.

Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on Hazar Imam by Sind University, Jamshoro at a Special Convocation. In his citation, Al-Haj Sayid Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Vice-Chancellor of the University said; 'In a short span of 12 years as Imam, His Royal Highness has shown that he is endowed with wisdom, versatility, sagacity and statesmanship which are characteristic of his noble and great family.
