Were I asked how I myself conceive the League's mission in the world I should answer in the words of the great Saadi: "The Children of Adam, created of the self-same clay, are members of one body. When one member suffers, all members suffer likewise. O thou who art indifferent to the sufferings of thy fellow, thou art unworthy to be called man". Or I might borrow the words of a wise Hindu poet philosopher: "All peoples in the world are to me even as my nearest kin and kith".

Indeed, all the problems that fall to the League may ultimately be reduced to one -- that of man, and the dignity of man. It is in that sense that the work of the League assumes its true significance and acquires its permanent value. The tribulations of one people are the tribulations of all. That which weakens one weakens all. That which is a gain to one is surely a gain to all. This is no empty ideal. It is a veritable compass to guide aright the efforts of statesmen in every country and of all men of good will who, desiring the good of their own people, desire the good of the whole world.

Today, in the divided and fractured world where prejudice now seems all too often to be replacing knowledge and understanding, the work of building bridges between cultures, of engendering respect and true knowledge, is I think, more urgent and more crucial than ever.

His Highness the Aga Khan the peace builder believes in co-existence which leads him to champion the dialogue of religions. His efforts to enhance harmony among followers of various faiths are especially noteworthy. Indeed, the basic tenets of all religions require that we work for peace and for justice.The future generations have the right to live in a better world – that world can only be secured through the vision and conscious efforts of the peace-builders of today

His Highness the Aga Khan is a tireless humanist whose views and beliefs are employed for the service of people and in the true expression of humanity. In pursuit of his vision, His Highness has drawn upon the views and thoughts of the great scholar and poet of Afghanistan, Nasir Khosraw Balkhi, as much as he has been influenced by the humanist philosophers of Europe.

I find that working with a monument allows you to do much more than just restoring the monument when they are adopted by the local citizens around the monument. Those citizens can be encouraged to modernize the infrastructure around the monument and then maybe to upgrade or create an educational facility and possibly a medical facility. Then you give them a little bit of micro-finance. You give them some financial assistance and suddenly you have shops and you have a life around these monuments

To all Ismaili here today, I would say this. There is nothing exclusive about you. While your religious faith will always preserve a special identity, your secular loyalty is solely to India and to its elected government. I urge my community to keep this constantly in their minds. But they should do more still. The Ismailis have always prided themselves on their highly developed social conscience. Our faith teaches us that we have obligations far beyond our own or even our family's interests.

Our historic adherence is to the Jafari Madhhab and other Madhahib of close affinity, and it continues, under the leadership of the hereditary Ismaili Imam of the time. This adherence is in harmony also with our acceptance of Sufi principles of personal search and balance between the zahir and the spirit or the intellect which the zahir signifies.

The other point of importance is to present your history in a logical form. When you are taking the type of advanced education that you must get for the university degrees today, you must have in every walk of life a logical concept. This does not mean to wipe away faith. But the real principle of Islam is that faith is logical. Islam would not be what it is if it were not logical.
