His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims and founder of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), was today conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters, by the American University of Beirut, says a press release.
In its citation, the University praised the Aga Khan as 'an avid philanthropist standing at the head of a network of service institutions focused on the have-nots of the world, Muslim and non-Muslim alike.'

The spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, His Highness The Aga Khan, today called on External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh in the Capital.
During his five-day stay in New Delhi, Aga Khan will be meeting several other India leaders to discuss the broadening framework of activities being undertaken by the Aga Khan Development Network in the country.

Khan is scheduled to meet President APJ Abdul Kalam later in the day.Founded in 1967, the Aga Khan Foundation is the principal grant-making agency for social development within the Shia Ismaili Imamat. Aga Khan is its founder and chairman.

Spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, the Aga Khan, today met President A P J Abdul Kalam and discussed his educational projects in India.
A Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman said Dr Kalam appreciated the projects, particularly those in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and asked him to expand his activities to Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the interest of tribals and girls.

The Aga Khan informed the President that he proposed to set up centres of excellence in 20 countries.

The meeting lasted about 40 minutes.

The Aga Khan Development Network has pledged continued investment in the country's social and economic projects.The network's resident representative, Mr Anil Ishani, said the support would not be affected by the political or economic situation as the organisation was confident that the people of Kenya would manage their affairs well.
Mr Ishani was speaking to diplomats and heads of international organisations during a reception the network held for them in Nairobi. He said last year, the Aga Khan Development Network spent Sh218 million on social development agencies in the country.

Aga Khan Foundation work is praised in UK The Aga Khan Development Network has been praised in London for its 'outstanding work' in Kenya.
In a debate in the House of Lords on Monday night, which discussed a whole range of development issues across East Africa, Baroness Rawlings said the Network was one of the 'finest organisations' in the field of development assistance.

'The AKDN comprises private development agencies to improve living conditions and opportunities in East Africa and other specific regions of the developing world,' Baroness Rawlings said.

The Aga Khan schools, once some of the best in Uganda, have moved to rebuild their history.
The Aga Khan Educational Service (AKES) in Uganda has set aside Aug. 16-18 for 'homecoming' activities to bring together former students of its 15 schools.

AKES chairman Amin Shivji said yesterday that the homecoming is meant to inspire the current students of the Aga Khan schools in Uganda, through interaction with successful alumni.

'We also want the alumni to assist the current students with books, career guidance and scholarships,' Shivji told journalists at Aga Khan High School.
