His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims was today received by President Mwai Kibaki at State House, Nairobi. The two leaders held wide-ranging discussions covering the implementation of previously articulated and new expansion plans for the agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Kenya specifically and Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean region more generally. These include investments of US$ 40 million in the health sector and US$ 30 million in the education sector.

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today suggested that the Aga Khan Foundation extend its projects in social, education and health sectors beyond Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The President made this suggestion to Aga Khan, spiritual leader of Ismaili Khoja community, who called on him at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Official sources said Mr. Kalam suggested that the foundation also take up work in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The sources said the Aga Khan briefed the President on the foundation's activities in India.

The Aga Khan Development Network will soon establish an Aids resource centre in East Africa.
The centre will assist staff members and communities in health, education and commercial sectors in addressing the Aids pandemic, the Aga Khan Foundation (East Africa) regional chief executive officer, Mr Arif Necky, said yesterday.

Speaking in Nairobi, Mr Necky said the network would involve rural communities, especially in the Coast Province, schools, staff and their families in the programme.

Noted international sales company Goffs Bloodstock Sales Ltd. is set to pass most of the $6,090,641 windfall received from the National Roads Authority on to its shareholders, the company announced on Wednesday.

Canada will convert around 2 billion dollars of debt into fresh aid for education promotion in Pakistan which would translate into around 100 million dollars for education.

President Bashar Assad received here Saturday Ismaelite Moslems Spiritual Leader, Prince Karim Agha Khan. Talks during the meeting dealt with the situation in the Middle Asia and with efforts that the Islamic states have to exert as to distinguish the Islam from the extremist aspects which were attributed to it. The Prince briefed President Assad on the projects which Agha Khan foundation intends to implement in Syria. Agha Khan viewed that Syria is an example to the joint living between all religions.

The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) has purchased 100 per cent of the shares in Maputo's best known hotel, the Polana.
Previously the hotel was 55 percent owned by a foreign consortium headed by the South African Kairos Hotels group, and 45 per cent by Mozambican companies - the national airline, LAM, the private financial investment company, SOCIEF, and the state- owned National Tourism Company, ENT.

The new owners signed the deeds of purchase in Maputo on Wednesday.
