May 28 marked an important milestone in an exciting project in Ward 26 that will create a new landmark in Toronto of international significance.

On that day the Prime Minister of Canada joined the Aga Khan and several hundred invited guests at the Foundation Ceremony marking the start of construction work on the $300 million Aga Khan Centre at the corner of Eglinton and the Don Valley Parkway.

The Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat is an elegant two-storey building containing meeting rooms, exhibition areas, an atrium, a resource centre and offices for the Aga Khan Foundation Canada and other agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network.

One of the world's most respected architectural awards, the 9th.Aga Khan Foundation Awards for Architecture, went this year to the B2 House designed by Turkish architect Han Tumertekin for Bilsar Tekstil's owners Selman and Suha Bilal. In the contest, which aims to understand and evaluate Islamic culture through architecture, a jury of nine people including artists, philosophers, architects and city planners evaluated 378 projects from 44 countries.Costing about $140,000, the B2 House's blend of comfort and design aspects with its innovative design won Tumertekin the award.

They held the annual Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala at the Waldorf this past Tuesday night. The theme was The Magic of Mardi Gras. Underwritten by Rolex Watch USA and chaired by Muffie Potter Aston, they raised more than $1.3 million. General Chair was Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, daughter of the late Rita Hayworth whose affliction with this terrible disease inspired her daughter’s monumental fundraising work.

When her mother, Rita Hayworth, died as a result of Alzheimer's Disease, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan could have chosen to lead her life out of the public eye. She chose, instead, to use her name and position to help fight this most misunderstood and fatal disease.

Le 11 juillet dernier, l'Aga Khan IV, chef spirituel de quinze millions d'Ismaéliens, et sa nouvelle épouse, la Begum Inaara, étaient à Lisbonne. Ils ont inauguré, en présence du président du Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, le Centre ismaélien de Lisbonne, premier du genre sur le contient européen. Hors sa vocation de lieu de rassemblement religieux, le centre accueille également le programme de développement du prince en faveur des déshérités.

The centre is a complex of buildings and gardens composed of three areas : institutional, community and religious. The centre was designed by the architect Raj Rewal in co-operation with the Portuguese architect Frederico Valsassina.

The complex covers an area of 18 000 square meters, of wich 5 500 square meters are built spaces and the remaining 12 500 is occupied by green spaces and gardens.

The Ismaili Centre assimilates in itself architectural styles and influences from Lisbon's Mosterio dos Jeronimos, India's Fatehpur Sikri and Spain's Alhambra.

The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development has submitted the names of four directors, Iain Cheyne, Sajid Zahid, Sultan Allana and Zakir Mahmood, as its nominees on the Board of Directors of Habib Bank Limited, to be inducted after handing over of the bank to the AKFED.
Sultan Allana will be the Chairman of the Board, while Zakir Mahmood will continue as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the bank.

Business Recorder understands that the ceremony of completing the privatisation transaction will take place some time in mid-February.

Talking to Chitral news Mian Asif Ali Shah member Gemstone Association Chitral said the Agha khan's visit should be a turning point to solve the back breaking communication problems being faced by the people of Chitral for the last 56 years. He appealed to the Agha Khan to help in the construction of the Lowari tunnel and for the time the Lowari tunnel remains closed institute a helicopter service between Chitral and Dir to facilitate traveling for the people of this area.

The order of the day for the meeting does not give any information, but according to national newspapers, the airline managed by Francesco Mengozzi is interested in buying a significant share holding, thus assuming control of management. The star, in question, is the garden at Humayun's Tomb, a star destination on a traveller's itinerary, bang in the nerve centre of teeming Delhi. The site was declared a world heritage monument by UNESCO in 1992.

The Aga Khan, the billionaire spiritual leader of the world's 15 million Ismaili Muslims, will build the English-speaking world's biggest Islamic art museum and cultural center in Toronto after plans to buy a site in London failed, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
The Aga Khan Development Network, one of the charitable institutions and businesses headed by the Aga Khan, said the museum would house artifacts from renowned private collections including those of the Aga Khan and of the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London.

The Spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim Community, His Highness the Aga Khan, arrived in Uganda yesterday.The Aga Khan was received at Entebbe International Airport by the Minister of State for Investment Sam Kutesa and of Regional Co-operation Kahinda Otafiire.
The Monitor Board Chairman Dr Martin Aliker and officials of the Aga Khan Foundation were also at the airport.
The Aga Khan and his entourage boarded a waiting military helicopter for a scheduled meeting with President Yoweri Museveni.

The President, General Pervez Musharraf has said that the government has provided a conducive policy frame work and support mechanism to encourage private investment in the micro finance sector.
He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the first micro finance Bank in the private sector set up by the Agha Khan rural Support programme and the Agha Khan Fund for Economic Development in Islamabad today.
