Aga Khan talks to Nicholas Tomalin about the problems of guiding his people in a continent in political ferment.
His Highness Prince Karim, Aga Khan IV, occupies tor twenty million Ismaili Muslims in the Indian sub-continent, Africa and the Middle East a position “somewhere between that of a Head of State and a Pope.” Though only 28, he has been their spiritual ruler since he succeeded his grandfather at the age of 19. This frank discussion of his role and duties is his first interview with a Western journalist for two years. The first part appeared last Sunday.
SUNDAY TIMES - WEEKLY REVIEW
THE RULER WITHOUT A KINGDOM : The Aga Khan talks candidly to The Sunday Times. He is only twenty-eight. This two-part conversation with Nicholas Tomalin is a frank discussion of his own personality and power.
Ladies and Gentlemen
It is a great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to address this inaugural session of the World Mountain Forum.
I am especially happy that the Ismaili Imamat has been given the opportunity to participate in a Forum organised by and for all those concerned with the difficulties facing the populations of mountain regions, and to share lessons that have been learnt, to exchange mutual experience and advice, to better identify the problems that exist, and to try, as part of a joint effort, to propose new and more efficient solutions.
The Aga Khan is to donate €40m (£27.4m) of his fortune to help restore France's largest privately owned estate, which includes a park, a Renaissance chateau, a racecourse and the biggest classical art collection in the country outside the Louvre.
The billionaire businessman and racehorse owner, who is a British citizen, will provide more than half of a €70m fund set up with the French state, the Institut de France - which owns the magnificent but badly decayed Chantilly estate - and local authorities.
