Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan was one of very few radical statespeople whose principal interest in the late 20th century was the troubled state of the planet. It was a small group, clinging to the belief that the failure of governments to come to terms with the harsh realities of the times was relevant to the use – or the non-use – of the United Nations. For years internationalism was unfashionable and unpopular but it was to this cause that Sadruddin, who was born to great wealth and privilege, devoted his energy.

The construction of the second of five bridges to be built across the Panj river [to link Tajikistan and Afghanistan] has started in keeping with a tripartite agreement between the Tajik and Afghan governments and the Aga Khan foundation.
The bridge is being built in [eastern Tajikistan's] Darvoz District's village of Ruzba.

The deputy head of the Badakhshonroh [road building] company, Khushnazar Abdurahimov, told a Khovar correspondent that the workforce of the Badakhshonroh and Pomirgeologiya [Pomir geology] companies had started to level the area where the bridge would be built.

The Aga Khan and his wife the Begum Aga Khan have filed for divorce, it emerged today.The couple married in May 1998 and have a four-year-old son, Prince Aly. They have been separated for over a year.
The Aga Khan, a British citizen, is the spiritual leader of the world's Ismaili Muslims.
His wife Begum Inaara is a German national who was known as Princess Gabriele Zu Leiningen before the marriage. She lives in Berkshire.
Her spokesman, Lord Bell of Bell Pottinger, said: 'The Begum considers the separation and divorce proceedings to be private matters and will be making no comment.'

The hopes of one of the world's richest men to build a museum on one of London's most prized sites suffered a blow yesterday when the site owner said it would prefer to sell to the NHS.
The Aga Khan had selected Block Nine, a disused Victorian hospital building on the Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament, to house the largest collection of Islamic art in the English-speaking world.

Boasting some of the finest examples of Middle Eastern painting over the centuries, the museum would be the latest multimillion-pound addition to the string of cultural complexes lining the South Bank.
