1987, November 28: President General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq inaugurated in the presence of H.H. The Aga Khan the Serena Hotel in Faisalabad. Prince Amyn Muhammad was also present on this occasion. The Faisalabad Serena Hotel is the latest addition to the Serena group of Hotels and Lodges operated by Tourism Promotion Services (TPS), the tourism arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. This Fund was established by Mawlana Hazar Imam in 1984 to plan and implement private sector industrial and tourism projects aimed at promoting long term development in the third world.

The Kampala Serena hotel has been ranked 5th among seven most loved hotels by the royalty globally according to CNN Travel.

In a travel guide for those seeking to travel in the “royals ’regal footsteps” CNN listed seven places that have been considered the royals’ favourite when they travel, where Serena takes fifth place globally.

Kampala, Uganda, 11 February 2004 – Serena Tourism Promotion Services (a subsidiary of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development) has signed a thirty-year lease concession agreement with the Government of Uganda and agreed to invest US$18 million investment for extensive refurbishment and upgrading of the former Nile Hotel which will re-open in September 2005 as the Kampala Serena Hotel.

TANZANIA (eTN) - East Africa’s leading tourist hotel chain, Serena Hotels, has officially taken over Tanzania’s biggest hotel, the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel, in the Indian Ocean city of Dar es Salaam.

Previously managed by Mövenpick Hotels and Resorts, the Movenpick Royal Palm Hotel has been rebranded to the Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel effective December 1, 2011 with a new management team.

THE Serena Group has set up a second hotel in the country, the Lake Victoria Serena Resort. The resort, which is part of the Aga Khan economic empire, lies on an expansive piece of land measuring 275 acres on the shores of Lake Victoria.

The land belonged to the Ranch on the Lake Hotel until about four years ago when Serena Group bought it and built a new hotel. The facility has so far cost $20m (about sh40b).

Another $30m (sh60b) is earmarked to complete the construction.

President Yoweri Museveni yesterday presided over the official opening.
