World-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble gave a special performance on the occasion of the presentation ceremony of the 2001 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. From high atop the Citadel dominating one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and out of its ornate Throne Room, the enchanting melodies of Ahmed Adnan Saygun, Johann Sebastian Bach, Maurice Ravel, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh and Kayhan Kalhor this evening recreated an age-old memory of the interaction of cultures for which the Silk Road is remembered.

At a ceremony held in Syria at the historical Citadel of Aleppo, His Highness the Aga Khan announced the nine recipients of the 2001 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and presented a special Chairman's Award to the Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The occasion completed the eighth cycle of the programme, which has a triennial prize fund of US$ 500,000, making it the world's largest architectural award. The Award programme will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2003.

His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims today concluded his eight-day visit to Syria with a second round of extensive discussions with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

The Aga Khan and Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa Miro also signed a Framework Development Agreement between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Syria. The Agreement will facilitate the effective functioning and optimum utilisation of the human and financial resources that the AKDN would mobilise for Syria. It also establishes an AKDN Representation Office in Damascus.

The Spiritual Leader of the world's Ismaili Muslims, Prince Kareem Agha Khan highly appreciated what he has seen in Syria of aspects of tolerance, fraternity and the joint living between the different groups.

During a meeting with mass of citizens in Tartous today, he noted that the basis which the Agha Khan foundation for development would depend on during cooperation with the Syrian institutions was put on.

'' Islam imposes on the individual to balance between the spiritual life and the financial life and his efforts have to be based on the values of Islam.'' the Prince added.

Prince Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims, met yesterday evening with MM. Mohammad al-Imadi, Minister of the Economy and External Trade, Nasser Qaddour, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Iyad al-Chatti, Minister of Health, Hassan Richeh, Minister of Higher Education, et Mohammad Moufdi Seifo, Minister of State for the Affairs of the Council of Ministers.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the world's Ismaili Muslims currently visiting Syria - visited the Grand Mosque of Damascus and the Mosque of the Umayyads today, where he was welcomed in particular by the Minister of Wakfs (Islamic goods).

Prince Aga Khan visited the different parts of the Mosque and came to know its history and the recent restoration work done in the Mosque, on recommendation of the [former?] President Hafez al-Assad.

The Spiritual Leader of the world's Ismaili Muslims, Prince Kareem Agha Khan and Premier Mohammad Mostafa Miro signed here Saturday an agreement of cooperation for development between Syrian government and the Agha Khan network for development.

The agreement included cooperation in fields of teaching, health, education, planning, building, tourism, trade, industry and countryside development.
