If Mohammed and Jonathan and Njoroge can take School certificate together, the chances are that they would get to understand each other far better than their parents were able to.

21st Century Challenges to the Human Rights Movement

How can we live together? That is the fundamental challenge of the modern world. Together, democracy and human rights offer a hopeful response: we must build political communities that not only tolerate, but draw on and celebrate, their internal diversity.

The Aga Khan: the singular appeal of a pluralist

The Globe and Mail

This week, the Aga Khan will be in Ottawa to address a joint session of Parliament, a signal honour reserved for a handful of extraordinary people who have a special relationship with Canada.

It is not hard to understand why this country is special to the Aga Khan, who for more than 50 years has been the spiritual leader of the world’s 15 million Ismaili Muslims. Shocked in 1972 when Uganda suddenly expelled anyone of Asian descent, including thousands of Ismailis, he turned to Pierre Elliott Trudeau in his search for a haven.

Ladies and Gentlemen

It was just eighteen months ago that the Government of Canada announced its decision to partner with the Ismaili Imamat and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in our Global Centre for Pluralism. What we welcomed at that time was a multi-faceted partnership—financial, yes, but also institutional and intellectual.

February 12, 2006 Evora, Portugal: H. H. The Aga Khan speaking at the symposium said,"But even to attribute the problem to ignorance is in no way to minimise its importance, he said. “In a pluralistic world, the consequences of ignorance can be profoundly damaging.
