Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHS-T), has distributed medical equipment worth Sh641.3 million as part of its Sh1.8 billion project meant to strengthen the country’s emergency healthcare.

The donation is implemented through a project dubbed “Improving Emergency Care in Tanzania” (IMECT), a tripartite project funded by the Polish government through its centre for international aid (PCPM), in conjunction with AKHS-T and the government.

Speaking to The Citizen today July 21, 2023, AKU officials said these initiatives not only create opportunities for individual growth and advancement but also contribute to the overall development of the region by addressing critical shortages in the healthcare and education sectors.

Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Health Institute has signed an agreement with Elekta Company for the procurement and installation of radiation therapy equipment that will better cancer screening and treatment in the country.

The equipment which cost between €4.5 million (Sh10.8 billion) to €5 million (Sh12 billion) will have the capacity to treat 50 to 75 patients within eight working hours.

The agreement, aimed at enabling the institute to acquire one of the world’s most advanced machines, will improve the provision of quality health services to Tanzanians.

Medical Research (NIMR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aga Khan Health Services in Tanzania (AKHST) to collaborate in health research and information sharing.

The MoU which was signed in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday opened a new beginning in health research chapter by supporting programmes which are being executed by both institutions with the aim of improving treatment and medication in Tanzania.

The Aga Khan University Hospital has introduced a premium outpatient facility where patients will pay Sh6,000 to see a consultant doctor.

The Sh55 million Peponi Executive and Specialty Clinic located in Westlands will house consultants and comes equipped with diagnostic machines, a laboratory and pharmacy.

The Sh6,000 consultancy fee is nearly triple what the hospital charges for visits to general doctors, but nearly matches what private consultants charge for specialised services.

In March 2019, Princess Zahra Aga Khan and the Prime Minister of Tanzania, Hon. Kassim Majaliwa launched the completion of the second phase of a US$ 79.8 million (TZS 183 billion) expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, which will enable the institution to serve over one million patients each year. The expansion was funded by a US$ 53.5 million (TZS 134 billion) loan from the French Development Agency (Agence Française de Développement - AFD) and a US$ 26.3 million (TZS 58 billion) contribution from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
