Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has conveyed her appreciation to Prince Rahim Aga Khan and Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) for the contributions made in Bangladesh over many decades.

The Prime Minister especially recognised the establishment of the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka, which seeks to create future Bangladeshi leaders who will contribute to further development of the country.

Prince Rahim Aga Khan and PM Sheikh Hasina met on Wednesday to discuss education and climate priorities in Bangladesh.

The prestigious Aga Khan Gold Cup's 49th golf tournament, hosted by the Ismaili Council for Bangladesh since 1973, was formally inaugurated amidst a lot of fanfare at the Kurmitola Golf Course on Friday morning.

The tournament was held after a gap of two years due to the pandemic, and is being sponsored by IPDC, Bombay Sweets, Habib Bank Ltd, Mumtaz Herbal, Olympic, Alco Aluminum, and Finis, said a press release.

Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan, chief of air staff, Bangladesh Air Force, was invited as the chief guest, and formally inaugurated the tournament by teeing off.

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is establishing an educational centre of excellence, The Aga Khan Academy, in Dhaka to provide international standard education for students and prepare them for leadership roles in Bangladesh and across the world.

The Aga Khan Academy is located on a 20-acre of land in Bashundhara, which will enroll 750 students with a capacity to expand to 1,200.

The academy will start its operation here next year, said officials of AKDN.

Volunteers in Bangladesh distributed facemasks to various frontline workers

The Ismaili Muslim Community in Bangladesh joined tens of thousands of community volunteers from over 30 countries to celebrate the first ever Global Ismaili CIVIC Day on Sunday.

To commemorate the day, the volunteers partnered with 60 civil society and government partners to improve the quality of life in their communities through diverse activities to protect the environment and aid the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a press release.

The Aga Khan National Council for Bangladesh has announced its partnership, under the Ismaili CIVIC umbrella, with Mission Save Bangladesh initiative to provide emergency support to underprivileged communities.

In keeping with its longstanding tradition of helping those in need, the Ismaili CIVIC today donated to Mission Save Bangladesh to provide underprivileged people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic with meat, rice and vegetables during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, according to a press release issued today.

The Aga Khan School Dhaka was established in 1988 with only 25 students and seven teachers, and was headed by a principal.

Today the student body has grown to over 1,200 students with 200 teachers and staff, the Aga Khan Education Service in Bangladesh said on Monday.

“The rich school life is balanced by the equally strong commitment to academic pursuits, built on a rigorous curriculum that challenges students to engage in new learning opportunities, from the IB-Primary Years Program in the Junior section to the CIE and IBDP curricula in the Senior section.”

The Academy in Dhaka will eventually be part of a network of 18 centres of educational excellence in a total of 14 countries across Africa, Central and South Asia and the Middle East.

The Aga Khan laid a foundation stone for Bangladesh’s first Aga Khan Academy on May 20, 2008, during his Dhaka visit.

The schools will use the International Baccalaureate curriculum and admit students on the basis of their academic potential rather than their ability to pay.

Designs for the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka (a state-of-the-art,1200-student residential school planned for the capital) won the award for best ‘Future Education’ project at the World Architecture Festival 2017, held from November 15-17 in Berlin, Germany.

The award recognises the excellence of the school’s design as well as the project’s intention to generate a positive social impact.

The Aga Khan Development Network yesterday signed a protocol with the government to operate its organs in Bangladesh as Prince Karim Aga Khan IV arrived in Dhaka on a two-day tour.
The protocol was signed after a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims, arrived in Dhaka on Monday morning on a two-day visit.
Foreign minister Dipu Moni received him at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his arrival by private a jet to a red carpet reception.

From there, he will go to the National Memorial in Savar to pay respects to the Liberation War heroes, a foreign ministry official says.

The Aga Khan is also the founder and Chairperson of the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the largest private development groups in the world.
