Esfahan

City in Iran with 700,000 inhabitants. Situated in central Iran, 400 km from the Persian Gulf, on an elevation of 1,600 metres above sea level. Economical base for Esfahan is surrounding area producing cotton, grain, and tobacco. Industries of the city include textiles; like cotton, silk, and wool; brocade, carpets, food, and metalwork.
Esfahan is well-known for its architectural wonders and public gardens. Much now rests in ruins, but a still a lot is preserved or have been restored. The landmark of Esfahan is the royal mosque, Masjid-i-Shah, from the 17th century, one of the best examples of Persian architecture.
