At a ceremony at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, on November 22nd 1991, His Majesty King Juan Carlos conferred on Mawlana Hazar Imam the Gran Cruz del Merito Civil. The award, one of Spain's most important civil decorations, was presented on the recommendation of the country's Foreign Minister.
In 1987, King Juan Carlos presented Hazar Imam with the Medalla de Oro del Consejo Superior de Colegios de Arquitectos at a ceremony at the Royal Palace in the presence of members of the Spanish Architectural Association.
Last year, at the time of the inauguration of the historic 14th Century Zafra House, restored with the assistance of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Mawlana Hazar Imam received from the Mayor of Granada, the Huesped de Honor de Granada.
