SPEECH BY PRESIDENT DANIEL ARAP MOI AT LUNCHEON HOSTED IN THE HONOR OF HIS HIGHNESS THE AGA KHAN VISIT TO NAIROBI, KENYA

Your Highness, Kenya and Aga Khan Development Network share a long history of co-operation. The Aga Khan Development Network has for a long time supported our development efforts by promoting socio-economic development in various fields such as health, education and rural development.

It has also promoted the economic development initiatives in the fields of industry, finance and tourism. In this connection, I am most grateful to Your Highness for Your organisation commitment for the grant of Shs. 4.4 billion to be utilized in the improvement of health and educational sectors. I would like on behalf of all Kenyans to thank Your Highness for these gestures which will go a long way in improving the general welfare of our people.

Your current visit to Kenya comes at a time when our country is facing severe drought and famine due to insufficient rain for the last two seasons. Whereas the government has taken adequate measures to feed those people who are worst hit by food shortages more so, we call upon all our friends to assist us in these emergency efforts. We do realise that the provision of famine relief is a temporary measure which does not address the root cause of the problem.

It is for this reason that the Government seeks to focus more on awareness-building programs such as research and extension programs for dry-land farming, drought resistant crops and water harvesting technologies. These programs are intended to minimise the impact drought in future.

Finally Your Highness, while you are here with us, I have no doubt that we shall have ample opportunities to discuss many matters of concern to both of us.
