Aga Khan opens development centre in Gilgit

..........GILGIT (October 20) : Prince Karim Aga Khan inaugurated the Professional Development Centre Northern Areas in Gilgit on Thursday.
..........The PDCN is a collaborative partnership between Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan (AKES,P) and the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED). It was developed with generous support from the European Commission and the Aga Khan Foundation.
..........The Professional Development Centre, Northern Areas has been set up for conducting training of in-service school teachers for their professional development and improvement of teaching skills.
..........The PDCN will train teachers of government AKESD and private sector. The PDCN aims to provide high quality classroom-based training to teacher educators who will subsequently train teachers at schools or as close as possible to the school in which the trainers teach. It will also train educational managers and instructional leaders for effective decision-making, planning and implementation.
..........The PDCN will conduct and guide research on practice and policy that affect different types of curriculum and resource materials, modes of testing and assessment, teaching skills and strategies and the impact of alternative educational delivery models.
..........Moreover, the centre will provide a source of inspiration, expertise and support to development educational innovations and to strengthen the quality of educational services in the north.
..........The PDCN is a 26,500 square feet facility spread over 32 lakhs 7 marlas (about 3.5 acres). The five building of the PDCN comprise of the Academic Block, dormitories for trainers, faculty residences and the Academic Development Unit.
..........The Academic Block, has classrooms, group rooms, research rooms, a conference room, faculty offices and an Information and Media Resource Centre. The PDCN has facilitates for housing 40 trainers and 5 faculty members who may come from outside of Gilgit. Facilities for central computer networking and Internet have also been provided.
..........The function was attended by Abbas Sarfaraz Khan, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas, Kurt Juul, Ambassador European Commission and Yannirck Gerad French Ambassador. Also present were Chief Secretary, Northern Areas, Sang-e-Mar Jan, Deputy Chief Executive, Northern Areas, Haji Fida Muhammad Nashad along with military officials, dignitaries and distinguished citizens and the area.-NNI
