Afghanistan, Tajikistan to inaugurate bridge

The Transport [and Roads] Ministry of Tajikistan has said that the construction of the first permanent bridge over the joint border river of Panj at Tajikistan's southern border with Afghanistan has been completed.

A spokesman for the Tajik ministry, (?Muhammad Shodiyev), spoke at a press conference to journalists on Thursday [31 Oct 02] and said that construction work on this bridge, the length of which is 135 metres and width is 3.5 metres was started last summer.

He added: The construction of this permanent bridge was funded by the Agha Khan foundation.

It links Tajik Mountainous Badakhshon Autonomous Region's Khorugh area and the northeastern Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan.

He also said: It is planned to inaugurate the bridge in a ceremony with the participation of Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov, the president of the Transitional Islamic State of Afghanistan, Hamed Karzai, and the leader of the Ismaili sect, Agha Khan, next Sunday (2 Nov 02).
