AGA KHAN IN KAZAKHSTAN
President Nursultan Nazarbaev received the Aga Khan on 17 December in
the Kazakh capital Astana and awarded him Kazakhstan's State Award for
Peace and Progress, worth about $30,000, Kazakh television reported. The
Aga Khan said the money would go toward scholarships for Kazakh students
at the University of Central Asia, an initiative started up by the Aga
Khan Development Network. He also advised Nazarbaev that pluralism
should be seen as a source of strength rather than weakness and should
inform "the formulation of policies and structures at all levels of
government." AA
