Aga Khan starts tour of Kenya

The Aga Khan, Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims arrives in Nairobi today at the start of a short visit. During the course of his stay, the Aga Khan is expected to meet with President Mwai Kibaki as well as senior Cabinet ministers.

The Aga Khan will also be present at the inauguration, by President Kibaki, of the Alltex EPZ Limited apparel manufacturing facility in the Export Processing Zone at Athi River.

The facility was established by Industrial Promotion Services (Kenya) Limited (an industrial affiliate of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development) and Global Ready-made Garments Industry LLC.

President Kibaki is also expected to join the Aga Khan and a number of distinguished international visitors, including ministers from countries in Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East, as well as educationists from Europe and North America, at the formal opening of the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa.

The academy is the first in an international network of schools of excellence being established by the Aga Khan Education Services that will set new standards in education and professional development for teachers.

The Aga Khan's visit to Kenya follows an extensive tour covering Pakistan and the Middle East, including visits to Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.
