April 25, 1983: Hazar Imam attended a reception hosted by the Government of Quebec at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Montreal attended by Premier of Quebec, Rene Levesque (photo) Hazar Imam replied to a welcome speech by Premier Levesque And Premier Rene Levesque spoke highly of Hazar Imam's activities and honoured Ismailis for their contribution to the country at this luncheon which was also graced by the presence of Begum Salimah and Prince Amyn Mohammed.

April 26, 1983: McMaster University/C.I.D.A./Aga Khan Project agreement was signed in Gilmour Hall of McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. The project will allow faculty from the Aga Khan School of Nursing in Pakistan to study at McMaster.

April 27, 1983: Hazar Imam gave a speech at the luncheon hosted by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, Toronto.

May 13, 1983: Arrived in Gilgit and was received by Mukhi Fida Ali Isar. Then went to Hunza and gave Deedar; Was presented with the traditional gift of a Choga (robe or overcoat) by Federal Minister for Northern Areas at Gilgit.

May 14, 1983: Mowlana Hazar Imam and Begum Salimah arrived in Sherquilla. Then went to Gupis; Unveiled the plaque commemorating the opening of the Sherquilla School. Hazar Imam gave a speech at this ceremony where he said; "The Aga Khan School, Sherquilla, is a project of which everyone in the Jamat and in the village can be proud. This school is a marvelous example of what voluntary efforts can achieve. The achievement here at Sherquilla should give everyone the confidence in the abilities of the people of the North."

May 14, 1983 : Mowlana Hazar Imam inaugurated the Singal Medical centre. he said : "The Medical Centre is a valuable addition to the network of the Aga Khan Health Services in Pakistan".

May 16, 1983: Hazar Imam, as Chancellor, accepted the Charter of the Aga Khan University from President Zia-ul-Haq in Karachi, Pakistan and said. "My prayer is that the University we are now building will enable many generations of students to acquire both knowledge and the essential spiritual wisdom needed to balance that knowledge and enable their lives to attain the highest fulfilment."

May 26, 1983 - the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the 8th International Seminar, held in Sana'a, Yemen Arab Republic. Hazar Imam expressed the hope that the seminar would lead to a greater awareness of the issues involved in reconciling the potentially conflicting demands of modernity and tradition and that, "when we arrive at the final discussion, we shall have learned something of practical as well as philosophical value to those architects and planners all over the Muslim world who are today, forging the environment of tomorrow." June 13, 1983: Hazar Imam gave a speech at Waldorf Astoria

June 24, 1983: letter from Lt-Governor of Ontario on occasion of Hazar Imam's visit to Toronto. Lieutenant-Governor John Aird of Ontario, Canada welcomed Hazar Imam with the words: "His Highness' commitment and concern for the dignity of man and his significant contributions toward creating a better understanding of Islam in the West...."

July 5, 1983: Visit to U.K. Jamats. 15,000 Ismailis gathered at Olympia Stadium on Thursday for Darbar. The whole Noorani family was present as Hazar Imam bestowed the title of Diwan on Sir Eboo Pirbhai, calling him "this young man".

July 7, 1983: Hazar Imam gave a speech at graduation ceremony organized of Institute for Ismaili Studies and the University of London.

August 2, 1983: Hazar Imam, together with Prince sadruddin, attended the funeral of actor David Niven.

August 1983: Hazar Imam sponsored "Azzurra" on behalf of Italy for the America's Cup International Boat Race at Newport, Rhode Island. With the aid of Gianni Agnelli of Fiat and a consortium of 17 Italian corporations, $4 million was generated to inaugurate the launch by Begum Salimah of the Azzurra. (click here)

September 1983: Interview granted by Hazar Imam to Paul Chutkow of American magazine "Connoisseur." This interview titled "The Aga Khan's Vision" took place at Hazar Imam's home in Paris on the Ile St. Louis and mainly centred on the Award for Architecture. Hazar Imam said: "I think life changes, people change, buildings change. I think that they must be built to change." (click here)

September 4, 1983: Hazar Imam and President Evren of Turkey presented the 1983 Aga Khan Award for Architecture at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul to eleven outstanding projects. Hazar Imam, in his address: "The search for solutions is a voyage of discovery on which we must neither fail to gain from experience nor fear to explore further."

September 28, 1983: According to Reuter, a company established by the Aga Khan plans to build a $120 million tourist complex in Turkey. It said the Aga Khan's Industrial promotion Services (I.P.S.) has presented a proposal to the Culture and Tourism Minister to build eight 5-star hotels with a total of 1,640 rooms.

October 18, 1983: "Special ceremony at Aiglemont" A special ceremony was held at Aiglemont on October 18 when a US million $ loan to the Aga Khan Foundation was signed for partial financing of the Aga Khan University and Aga Khan Hospital, Karachi.

The long term financing plan for the project consists of mobilising resources through major national and international development agencies as well as philanthropic contribution supplemented by commercial loans of this kind.

The seven-year loan to the Aga Khan Foundation arranged by American Express International Banking Corporation and Lloyds Bank International Ltd., also includes nine other participating international banks. A syndicated loan, such as this one, for the development of a major philanthropic institution in the Third world is unprecedented

November 1, 1983: McGill University, Montreal, Canada, confers Doctorate on Mowlana Hazar Imam. David Johnston, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said in his presentation "This man is a bridge between North and South, East and West. His leadership is beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. In a world torn by division, hostility, war and fear of nuclear holocaust, he is a shining beacon of inspiration and of hard-headed accomplishment in improving the lot of humankind, in elevating the quality of civilized life and in uplifting all peoples of the world to cherish the brotherhood of man."

December 1983: Hazar Imam gave an interview to Life Magazine. This interview entitled "In Him, East and West Meet" was by Margot Dougherty and Richard B. Stolley. It was followed by an article on the theme "HH Prince Karim Aga Khan, spiritual leader and his big business"

March 16th 1983, President Zia ul-Haq presents the Charter of the Aga Khan university to Mowlana Hazar Imam at a ceremony in Karachi. The Charter states: "Whereas His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan and the Aga Khan Foundation have established in Pakistan a Health Science Complex whose programs will promote human welfare in general and the welfare of the people of Pakistan in particular and have expressed the desire to establish an autonomous University...There shall be established a University to be called The Aga Khan University..."
