LP THE SAN DIEGO-BASED Women's International Center is scheduled to present its 1989 "Living Legacy" awards to nine women during a reception and gala at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Hotel del Coronado. The Living Legacy recipients are:
TX Ann Armstrong Dailey, founding director of Children's Hospice International, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that seeks to help terminally ill children who are not covered under regular hospice or medical programs. While here, Dailey will give the keynote address at the San Diego Hospice's annual conference, at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Town & Country Convention Center. Dianne Feinstein, human rights advocate and former mayor of San Francisco; Pearl Bailey, entertainer and United Nations goodwill ambassador; Gloria McMillan, a teacher at La Jolla High School and an adviser to the Space Bridge International Friendship Sister School Project, who was a California finalist in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Teacher in Space Program; Jane Russell, actress and founder of WAIF (World Adoption International Fund), an organization to aid in the adoption of children with special needs; June Scobee, widow of astronaut Francis Scobee and founder and chairwoman of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education; June Wayne, artist, author and educator; Beatrice Wood, internationally renowned potter; * Yasmin Aga Khan, daughter of the late actress Rita Hayworth and president of Alzheimer's Disease International. All Living Legacy recipients are expected to attend the gala except Khan, who is ill, according to Women's Center founder and president Gloria Lane. Lane said four other awards also will be presented, two of them posthumously: The Tribute to Greatness award honors Marie Curie, the late French chemist and physicist. Scheduled to accept the award is her daughter, Eve Curie Labouisse, and presenting it, actress Greer Garson, who portrayed the famed scientist in the 1943 movie, "Madame Curie." The Tribute to Motherhood award honors the late Eleni Gatzoyiannis, a Greek who gave her life to save her children from the communist faction in her village following World War II. Accepting the award will be Nicholas Gage, her son and the former New York Times reporter whose book about the experience served as the basis of the 1985 film, "Eleni." The International Organization Award goes to to Childhelp USA, an international group for the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Accepting will be co-founder Yvonne Fedderson. The Jehan Sadat Peace Award goes to Children as Teachers of Peace, a cultural exchange organization. Accepting will be co-directors Jerry Jampolsky and Diane Cirincione. The Women's International Center is a nonprofit service and education foundation established in 1982 to honor and encourage women's contributions to mankind. Its stated goal is to build a Women's International Pavilion here, which is described as "a permanent, educational, artistic and humanitarian facility to fulfill the dedicated purpose of the center." Lane said $25 million is needed for the pavilion to be built, and that individuals and corporations are expected to donate the money for it. So far, $500,000 has been pledged toward that goal, she said. She said she expects a 25-acre parcel of land in Escondido to be donated "and as soon as it is, the pavilion is built." Ground-breaking will take place in 1992 at the earliest, she said. Lane said proceeds from the annual awards gala -- the only fund-raising event the Women's International Center holds each year -- go primarily toward the organization's scholarship programs. So far, $10,000 has been raised through those, she said. Lane said that the fund-raising and disbursement of money is overseen by a board of directors, on which she serves as president. Her organization is all-volunteer, she said. The Women's International Center also will hold an international forum and brunch at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the hotel.
