1985

1985: Major world event occurred. Hazar Imam invited 450 personalities from the scientific and political world for a reflexion meeting on the non-proliferation of nuclear arms.

1985: The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan conferred the honorary fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons to Mowlana Hazar Imam.

January 28, 1985: Hazar Imam gave a speech to an audience of more than 200 businessman in Zurich asking them to increase their activities in Third World countries, quoting the example of I.P.S. and T.P.S.

February 14, 1985: In an article titled "The Unknown Aga Khan" published in L'Express, Michael Legus wrote; "His Highness shows another image than the one made up by the press " (click here)

March 6,1985: Hazar Imam signed the agreement in Cambridge, Massachussets marking the extension and expansion of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at the M.I.T. and Harvard. The agreement consists of a grant of $900,000 U.S. per annum in the field of Architectural Education for the Islamic World. (click here)

April 24, 1985: The British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, officially opened the Ismaili Centre in London, England. Hazar Imam, as well as Government Ministers and other dignitaries were present at this historic occasion. In His speech, Hazar Imam referring to the general public's belief that national political disputes in Islamic countries were a part of their religion, said: " such a distorted portrayal of the true background causes unnecessary misunderstanding of Islamic questions and hinders mature response to them." Mrs. Thatcher paid tribute to the Ismaili community and said: "The community in Britain is self-sufficient and independent, energetic and highly talented "

May 20, 1985: Mowlana Hazar Imam and Begum Salimah were welcomed at the Red Cross Headquarters at Geneva. Hazar Imam announced a donation of $125,000.00 U.S. to the Red Cross for its services in the developing world.

June 25, 1985: Zamana Gallery, London, U.K. was officially opened in the presence Mowlana Hazar Imam by the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Gowrie, Minister of Arts. In explaining the meaning of the word "Zamana", Hazar Imam said; "In a number of Islamic languages, the word Zamana' means both the age' or the epoch'. (click here)

June 26, 1985: Zamana Gallery was opened to the public with an exhibition entitled "Contemporary Houses, Traditional Values" - a study of an important architectural trend in three North African countries, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. The exhibition ended on September 2, 1985.

August 23, 1985: Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Brian Mulroney opened Ismaili Jamat Khana and Centre in Burnaby, B.C. in presence of Mowlana Hazar Imam, Begum Salimah and Prince Amyn Mohammad.

November 1985: President Ronald Reagan of the USA and his wife Nancy Reagan took over the Aga Khan's 18th century Maison de Saussure in a village near Geneva as a base for the summit with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. President Reagan proclaimed at the end of that summit that he and Gorbachev had found a key to super-power peace. (click here)

November, 1985: Inauguration of Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan by President Zia-ul Haq. Hazar Imam said, "This is the day I have waited for twenty-one years". President Zia described the University as "the greatest gift to Pakistan."

November 11, 1985: Speech given by President General Mohammed Zia ul Haq at the inauguration of the Aga Khan University's Faculty of Health Sciences and the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan " I came here a few years ago and I say a deserted piece of ground. I came the next time I saw a bit of life, I came the next time and we gave the Charter to the University. It is only a matter of two years we see here, not a child, but a child that is certainly mine, no doubt, but is the child of His Highness which has been reared up in the last few years with such love and affection by Himself, the Begum, by His Highness Prince Amyn Mohammed and by a team of dedicated workers .." November 11,1985: Monday. Aga Khan University inaugurated. The Aga Khan University and Hospital are supported by the A.K.F. and has signed agreements with leading academic institutions, including Harvard, McGill and McMaster University which are contributing to its faculty and curriculum development. Program assistance is being provided by international agencies including C.I.D.A., Alberta Aid and the O.D.A. "A dream becomes reality." (click here)

November 1985: A special convocation was held conferring Hazar Imam with the honorary fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan.

November 11, 1985: President Zia-ul-Haq of Pakistan announced that 2 bursaries would be given by the Government of Pakistan to the Aga Khan Health Faculty of the AKU to be named after Begum Salimah. In turn, Mowlana Hazar Imam announced the setting of an endowment fund.

November 12, 1985: Begum Salimah performed the opening ceremony of the extension wing at Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan School in Karimabad.

November 12, 1985: Pakistan Television Corporation telecast an interview given to it by Hazar Imam. In this interview, Hazar Imam said that Islam is the eternal faith and that Islam was the faith for man. (click here).

November 14, 1985: Diplomas granted to 69 nurses at A.K. School of Nursing by Begum Salimah. Six nurses were from the army. In speech, Begum Salimah said that nurses can bring a major contribution to society.

November 14, 1985: Mowlana Hazar Imam was Chief Guest at the 60th anniversary of the Aga Khan Maternity Home (Janbai), Kharadhar, Karachi. He presented a special award for the longest service at leadership level to Varasiani Dr. Shirin Lakhani. Hazar Imam also gave medals to volunteers, some of whom had given up to 50 years of voluntary service, to the Janbai Maternity Home. Hazar Imam said, "The role of our volunteers in keeping that spirit of service alive, and in materially enabling our institutions to maintain their fabric and improve their facilities is beyond praise." December 23, 1985: Prince Sadruddin and Princess Aleya spent a fortnight at Bahati Villa in Mombasa, Kenya for their annual holidays. The Prince invited Ismaili Council leaders to an informal Tea Party on Sunday, January 5, 1986. (photo)
