1996

February 1996: Prince Amyn visited Lisbon, Portugal in his capacity as a Director of the Aga Khan Foundation. At a gala dinner organized by the Aga Khan Foundation, President Mario Soares of Portugal was the Chief Guest. In his speech, where he profiled the Ismaili community, Prince Amyn said: "This far flung community is characterized despite geographical distances, by its coherence and characterization ." March 20, 1996: NAIROBI STOCK EXCHANGE (NSE) yesterday thanked His Highness the Aga Khan for the decision by the Tourism Promotion services (tps) to forego its 23.3 Per cent pre-emotion rights in respect of government shares in the Serena Lodge and Properties Limited, the owner of the Serena lodges and hotels in Kenya. NSE chair Mr JIMNAH MBARU, in a letter to the Aga Khan, sent through the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, said the move was in the interest of Kenyan investors and would play a positive role in facilitating the Government's privatisation and divestiture programme.

April 1996: The University of British Columbia (UBC) and the Aga Khan University announced a joint program to promote academic exchanges and research between the two institutions in the field of respiratory medicine (click here)

May 26 and 27,1996: Convocation address to Baccalaureate in Providence, Rhode Island at Browns University at the First Baptist Church in America. Hazar Imam said: "The myth that Islam is responsible for all the wrongdoing for certain Muslims may well stem from the truism that for all Muslims the concepts of Din and Duniya (Faith and World) are inextricably linked .

May 27, 1996: Hazar Imam was invested with the honorary degree of LL.D by Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.

1996: Aga Khan Development Network offices in Geneva; starting this summer, a single office complex will bring together several Geneva-based institutions of the A.K.D.N. Located at 1-3 Avenue de la Paix near Geneva's numerous other international organisations, the new centralized offices reflect the increasing synergy between the programs of the Aga Khan Foundation , the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, Aga Khan Education Services and the Aga Khan Health Services, as well as their integrated approach to development.

July 1996: New alliance for the AKF.

July 4, 1996: The French "Le Nouvel Economiste" dated July 4, explains at lenght the development approach of the Aga Khan Network.

September 10, 1996: Princess Zahra Aga Khan visited Ottawa, Canada as Guest of Honour at the launch of the book, Speaking Out: Women's Economic Empowerment in South Asia. Princess Zahra said; "Womens's rights are human rights and when women can improve their social and economic well-being, the benefits spread to their families, communities and nations."

October 1996: Hazar Imam visited Hunza in early October and gave Holy Deedar at Alyabad, Gilgit and Karimabad. At Karimabad, Hazar Imam opened the restored Baltit Fort.

October 17, 1996: Hazar Imam visited South Africa and gave a speech at the Commonwealth Press Union in Cape Town Cape Town. Hazar Imam said: "Not only can we transport ourselves in a few hours to any spot on the planet, we can also transport our words and our values, our songs and our dreams, our newspapers and our films, our money and our credit, our books and even our libraries to any part of the world, in a fraction of a second.....The telecommunications revolution - including the Internet and World Wide Web - is providing us with ever greater power at ever lower prices.

October 25, 1996: Hazar Imam received the Prestigious Hadrian Award from the World Monument Fund at the Plaza Hotel, in New York, U.S.A. "To recognise the achievements of a man of deep learning and vision, His Highness the Aga Khan" - During the event, several speeches were made: Beside Hazar Imam's speech, there were several speeches: Rockefeller, Cyrus Vance, Rothchild and by Michel David-Weill the co-chairman of the World Monument Funds. "Presenting His Highness the Aga Khan with the 1996 Hadrian Award, the World Monuments Fund honors a man who has devoted his life to preserving and improving our built environment. He has done this with vision, passion, and intelligence. The results are part of his legacy to the cultural heritage of our world." said Glenn D. Lowry, Director, The Museum of Modern Art

November 10: Met in Moscow with leader of the Movement for the National Revival of Tajikistan, ex-prime minister of Tajikistan Abdumalik Abdulldzhanov in an effort to settle the inter-Tajik conflict.

November 21, 1996: Hazar Imam visited Pakistan for Convocation at the Aga Khan University, Karachi. His speech was preceded by the speech of the Governor of Sind.

November 22, 1996: Friday. Hazar Imam, Chancellor of the Aga Khan University, launched four major projects aimed at strengthening and expanding nursing education, specialised diagnostic services, advanced research and community health-care. He made a speech at the following opening and foundation ceremonies: Rufayda al-Aslamya Center, The Hadi Building and the Juma building.

December 16, 1996: Princess Zahra became engaged to Mark Boyden. Mowlana Hazar Imam sent a Message to His worldwide Jamat. The engagement was reported in several sources including Dawn Magazine, The Express and The Times. A photo of the couple was released by Reuters and beautiful photographs as well as a detailled article in French were published in Point de Vue

December 17, 1996: Mowlana Hazar Imam received the Key to the City of Lisbon and made a speech (Photos and speech here)

December 18, 1996: Mowlana Hazar Imam attended the foundation ceremony of the first purpose built Jamatkhana in Lisbon.

December 18, 1996: "Dedicated to the preservation of spiritual values, the promotion of social development, and the enhancement of intellectual discovery, the Centro Ismaili will seek to contribute to the enjoyment, by citizens of Lisbon and visitors alike, of spaces and buildings whose inspiration will aim to empathise as well as expand our cultural horizons." Said The Aga Khan in His speech at the Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony of the Centro Ismaili Lisbon.
