1982: World Presidents of the Federal and National Councils meet in London for four days to discuss the forthcoming Silver Jubilee year.

1982: Apple Computer Inc. of Cupertino, California, U.S.A awards 34 computer systems worth $120,000 to the Aga Khan Foundation's education projects in Kenya. Mr. Mark Vermilion, Manager of Apple computer grants said; "The Aga Khan Foundation has a substantial track record of innovative development, health and educational projects worldwide."

January 1982: The Institute of Ismaili Studies announced its mutual collaboration with McGill University in the implementation of the two year program leading to a Masters Degree in Islamic Studies.

January 23, 1982: Hazar Imam was guest of King Juan Carlos at the 20th International Nautical Exhibition in Spain.

April 1982: Prince Amyn Mohammad visits Ismaili Centre under construction and inspects the interior.

1982: Vazir Ramzan Merchant, President of Prince Aga Khan Shia Imami Ismaili Federal Council for Pakistan receiving the "Golden Mercury Award" on behalf of Sarkar Mowlana Hazar Imam. (click here)

April 7, 1982: The Gold Mercury "AD PERSONAM" award was bestowed on Mowlana Hazar Imam for the outstanding role in promoting economic cooperation, exchange of technologies and experience, and for his role in renewing social and economic progress.

May 1982: Meetings at Aiglemont with leaders of the Jamats.

July 11, 1982: Leaders of the Jamat paid homage to Mowlana Hazar Imam at Aiglemont on the auspicious occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Mowlana Hazar Imam's accession to the throne of Holy Imamat. President Sir Eboo Pirbhai delivered the address of homage to Hazar Imam on behalf of Ismailis worldwide.

July 26, 1982: Hazar Imam gave a speech at the foundation ceremony of Burnaby Jamat Khana, Vancouver. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney of Canada also attended the ceremony.

July 29, 1982: An agreement involving equity participation in I.P.S. (Kenya) by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Finance for Industry Limited (FFI), and the Kenya Commercial Finance Company Limited (KFCF) was signed in Nairobi, Kenya. (click here)

July 30, 1982: "Aga Khan promotes new concept in Third World development". An agreement providing for the restructuring and expansion of the activities of the Diamond Trust of Kenya into the field of merchant banking was signed at Aiglemont between Hazar Imam and the Executive Vice-President of the World Bank affiliate, the International Finance Corporation

July 1982: "As the World sees Mowlana Hazar Imam" was the title of an article printed in the "Hidayat" magazine Imamat Day issue.

September 2, 1982 - Institute of Ismaili Studies. Hazar Imam visited the Board of Governors of the Institute of Ismaili Studies and later conferred with the Faculty and met the staff and students of the Institute. He was particularly pleased with the progress that the library had made since Sept. 1st, 1979 when He last saw it. The present holdings of the library total approximately 100,000 volumes and 1,000 manuscripts; the latter mainly in Arabic, Persian and Khojki

October 5, 1982: Silver Jubilee Darbar in Nairobi.

October 6, 1982: Speaking at a luncheon in Nairobi hosted by the Aga Khan Health and Education Services.

October 7, 1982: Hazar Imam gave a speech at the Enabling Environment Conference entitled "Social Institutions in National Development"

October 7, 1982: Hazar Imam gave a second speech at the conference.

October 7, 1982: Hazar Imam spoke at a luncheon hosted by I.P.S., T.P.S., Diamond Trust, Jubilee Insurance Company and the Nation Printers in Nairobi, Kenya.

October 7, 1982: Hazar Imam gave a speech at the dinner hosted in honour of the President of the Republic of Kenya.

October 7, 1982: Begum Salimah inaugurates the pilot scheme for the use of computers in education at the Aga Khan Academy in Nairobi. She said "Nothing can ever replace a teacher's personal guidance and understanding of his pupils. Nor can a computer do a student's thinking for him..."

October 11, 1982: Hazar Imam, in a foundation ceremony, launched a 470,000 pounds extension at the Aga Khan Medical Centre in Kisumu. He emphasized the responsibilities of hospitals to the communities which they serve. "They must reach out beyond their walls.

October 12, 1982: Hazar Imam gave a speech at the luncheon hosted by the Ismailia Council for Kenya.

October 12, 1982: Hazar Imam met with Muslim leaders in Nairobi (photo). Met with His Worship The Mayor Nathan Kahara and Sir Eboo Pirbhai at Nairobi's City Hall.

November 2, 1982: The 7th Aga Khan Architecture Awards Seminar was held in Dakar, Senegal and was opened by the President Abdou Diouf. Speaking for all the participants, Hazar Imam said, "We wish to see and understand the shapes that your cities have taken and those which you have rejected. We want to hear the voices of men and women who choose, who invent, who build and who live in your modern cities and your traditional villages.

November 5, 1982: Closing Remarks given by Hazar Imam at the 7th Aga Khan Award for Architecture Seminar.

November 21, 1982: At a dinner hosted by Hazar Imam in honour of President Nyerere, during his visit to East Africa, Hazar Imam spoke of the establishment of the Aga Khan University in Karachi. He said: "This University will broaden its teaching to other disciplines and will be unique in having faculties in other countries."

November 20, 1982: Hazar Imam was guest at a dinner hosted by President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania. Hazar Imam was on a Silver Jubilee visit to Tanzania from November 20 to 26, 1982.

November 22, 1982: Hazar Imam met with Dr. Milton Obote of Uganda and held talks on the Government's new Expropriated Properties Bill which provides the legal framework for the return of properties expropriated in 1972. President Obote said; "The new Uganda has nothing to do with racialism or colour." (click here)

November 25, 1982: Hazar Imam and the Minister of Natural Resources, the Rt. Hon. Ali Mwinyi unveiled the plaque marking the extension of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar-es-Salaam.
