1989

1989: The Serena Hotel in Nairobi is undergoing a major $6 million renovation of public facilities and services and plans are being considered to extend the recently renovated Serena Beach Hotel at Mombasa. The proposed extension which includes three up-country lodges. The Serena Group, with hotels in Kenya and Pakistan, is operated by Tourism Promotion Services (T.P.S.), the tourism development wing of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (A.K.F.E.D.).

1989: Second win in three years at Epsom Derby for Hazar Imam. The winning horse was Kahyasi, an 11-1 outsider. Princess Zahra attended this Derby. (see "Most eligible Princess") (click here)

February 2nd, 1989: India visit to Gujerat Jamats. Hazar Imam visited a number of rural development projects in Broach District which form part of the A.K.R.S.P. activities in the State. These projects, totalling over 200, emphasize income generation and effective management of renewable resources (water source and wasteland development, savings, credit and supply schemes, animal husbandry and agriculture). The 12 days visit ended February 14th.

Address at the Ahmedabad luncheon by the Aga Khan Development Network (A.K.D.N.) of institutions. In His address, Hazar Imam said: "Substantial growth must be rooted in policies that preserve the rural environment, enable rural communities to live in harmony with their surroundings and slow down the process of urbanization." February 1989: Hazar Imam gave an interview to All-India Radio/TV

February 6, 1989: Inaugurated the Development Cooperative Bank's (DCB) Integrated Standard Software Programme in Bombay.

February 11, 1989: Hazar Imam and Begum Salimah met with the President of India, Shri R. Venkatraman at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

February 13, 1989: Hazar Imam laid wreaths at the Memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Srimati Indira Gandhi. (photo)

February 25, 1989: Hazar Imam sent a 3 pages hand-written letter to Mr. Bhogilal of Ahmedabad for the "magnificent hospitality" shown to Hazar Imam during his stay at the Bhogilal home.

February 1989: Hazar Imam gave an interview to Aroon Purie, Editor of "India Today"

March 1989: 11-day tour to Pakistan on the occasion of the first convocation of the Aga Khan University and Medical College. (click here)

March 12, 1989: Hazar Imam performed the Foundation Stone laying ceremony of the Aga Khan Girls' Hostel in Hyderabad, Pakistan.

March 13, 1989: The Aga Khan Maternity and Child Care Center was inaugurated in Hyderabad by Hazar Imam.

March 16, 1989: Hazar Imam attended the inauguration ceremony of the Serena Hotel, Quetta, Baluchistan and made a speech.. On that occasion, Prince Amyn also made a speech..

March 20, 1989: First Graduation Ceremony referred to as the Convocation, was held at the Aga Khan University in Karachi presided over by Hazar Imam in His role as the Chancellor of the University. 42 graduates received the MBBS degrees. Premier Benazir Bhutto was speaker at the Convocation.

June 28, 1989: Said at the inauguration of the John Addis Islamic Gallery at the British Museum "Barriers between the Islamic World and the West are beginning to break down everywhere.."

September 1989: In Cambridge to inaugurate joint Islamic Architecture Programme.

October 11, 1989: Wednesday; Hazar Imam received an honorary degree of Doctorate of Literature in Education from the University of London(Logan Hall). Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, Chancellor of the University, conferred the Degree during the Founders Day Convocation ceremony in which he was cited as "a calm voice in troubled times, a world leader, uniquely placed to bridge the cultural differences dividing the East and West." 1989 - Cairo jubilant over Islamic world's most prestigious culture event. Hazar Imam said, "What the Muslim world needs today is more of those architects who can navigate between the twin dangers of slavishly copying the architecture of the past and of foolishly ignoring its rich legacy."

October 15, 1989: Aga Khan Award for Architecture, held at the Citadel of Salah el Din, was shared by eleven projects at ceremony in Cairo attended by Hazar Imam and the President and Mrs. Mubarak. The Master Jury selected the winning projects from 241 nominations. The prize of $500,000-the world's largest architectural prize-was presented by Mrs. Mubarak to be shared by the 11 winners. October 27, 1989 - Hazar Imam gave a keynote address at Rockefeller Foundation at a dinner hosted by the Rockefeller family at their Pocantico Hills, N.Y. home on the occasion of the 150th birthday of John D. Rockefeller. Hazar Imam was introduced by his former classmate at Harvard, Mr. David Rockefeller Jr. (Senator Rockefeller)
