UGANDA POWER PROJECT TO START IN JULY

2005, December 27: The building of a hydroelectric dam to close Uganda's current power supply deficit of 120 megawatts is slated to start in July. CRAFTING THE PAST

The Aga Khan programme provides on-the-job training courses and offers vocational training. SYRIA: MICRO CREDIT PROGRAMME EXPANDING

2005, May 18: HAMA, 18 May (IRIN) - Mohamad Abul Jadayel, a father of two in the northwestern Hama governorate in Syria, used to be unemployed for long periods of time. Sometimes he didn't even have enough money to feed his family. But now his life has changed. UGANDA GIVES IPS GROUP BID THE GREEN LIGHT

2005, May 10: A consortium led by the Industrial Promotion Services (IPS) has won the bid to construct and operate the Bujagali Hydro Power Dam on the River Nile in Uganda. The consortium was the highest scoring bidder to submit a bid that could be funded by the private sector, as required by the request for proposals. IPS is the industrial development affiliate of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) which promotes private sector initiatives and entrepreneurship through equity investment particularly in Africa and Asia. IGNORANCE POSES A DANGER TO WEST, SAYS AGA KHAN

GLOBAL CENTER OF PLURALISM IN OTTAWA, CANADA

2005, April 18: The Government of Canada today welcomed the decision by the Aga Khan Development Network to establish the Global Centre for Pluralism in Canada. The Government of Canada intends to contribute $30 million to the endowment set up by the Aga Khan Development Network for the establishment of the Centre. 2005, March 2: Kisumu’s Aga Khan Primary School bears the name of the spiritual leader of the Ismaili faith. Though his Highness the Aga Khan has never visited the school, his daughter has done so many times. But his organisations have been instrumental in founding many institutions, including schools, universities and hospitals, in Kenya and elsewhere in the world. Aga Khan Primary in Kisumu is an example of these and has a lot to be thankful for. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS CREATE GREEN OASIS AT CAIRO'S CORE

2005, March 1: The sprawling city of Cairo has congestion, pollution and 17 million people. Now it has a 74-acre park right in the heart of its historic center. Laila Stino and her husband, Maher, laid out the master plan for the park landscapes, working out which groundcover will keep a steep slope from eroding and which trees won't block out views of nearby minarets or the fortification of the Citidel. 2005, February 16: Geneva: The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) announced that Roshan, the leading Afghan telecommunications company, has won the 2005 Global GSM Association Award for Best Marketing Campaign. The tenth GSM Association (GSMA) Awards winners were announced on 16 February during a spectacular gala evening at the mobile industry’s leading annual event, the 3GSM World Congress 2005, in Cannes, France. Roshan beat international companies such as Motorola USA and Vodafone UK to win the coveted Best Marketing Campaign Award for its “Light and Hope” campaign, aimed at making mobile communications widely accessible to the Afghan people. AGA KHAN TO HELP RESCUE FRENCH CHATEAU

2005, February 13: One of France's most stunning chateaux, which houses the country's second most important art collection, is to be rescued from falling into disrepair thanks to a helping hand from its neighbour, the Aga Khan. According to Hubert Monzat, in charge of the development of Chantilly in the Aga Khan's office, the annual shortfall is between 500,000 euros (650,000 dollars) to 1.5 million euros (two million dollars) a year. 2005, February 8: OTTAWA - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, today announced 74 new appointments to the Order of Canada. Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date. His Highness the Aga Khan is appointed as Honorary Companion of the Order of Canada. The citation reads as follow: Personifying cherished Canadian values, His Highness the Aga Khan has devoted his life to protecting the environment and alleviating human suffering due to poverty. Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims since 1957, he has guided the spiritual growth of his followers, teaching compassion and tolerance by example. IN CAIRO, A PARK BECOMES AN OASIS

2005, February 06: CAIRO'S historic Islamic quarter, a maze of congested, rubble-strewn streets smelling of car fumes and uncollected trash, is being made over with the opening last fall of a 74-acre park and continuing efforts to restore some of the area's many monuments and noteworthy buildings. The $30 million project, which began about 10 years ago, has been undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, a Geneva-based organization focusing on the revitalization of cities in the Muslim world.
